General
Task
The "anti-lock braking system" (ABS) is an active safety system. It prevents the wheels from locking during braking and thereby maintains the steerability and directional stability of the vehicle even during heavy braking.
ABS supports optimum vehicle deceleration on every road surface within the physical limits.
Advantages Of The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Compared With Uncontrolled Braking Systems
^ Reduces the risk of accident in dangerous situations by optimum braking whilst maintaining the steerability at the same time (it is possible to drive round obstacles whilst braking heavily), thus making driving easier.
^ Maintains full steerability automatically during "panic stops"
^ Permits full pedal pressure on every road surface, with safety significantly increased particularly on wet, slippery or icy roads
