With Hydraulic Puller
With Hydraulic PullerCAUTION: This operation will distroy the two row angular ball bearing
NOTE: The wheel carrier is not removed:
REMOVAL
1. Remove the rear axle shaft, refer to Axle Shaft Assembly, Constant Velocity Type
2. Remove parking brake shoes, refer to Brakes and Traction Control
3. Remove the axle shaft flange as follows:
a. Insert threaded bolt (010j) part 03 through rear axle shaft flange (10) from inside and screw on collar (010g)
b. Install support plate (010d) on the end face of the wheel carrier
c. Guide thrust washer (010f) with pressure pin (010b) through the collar and mount on support plate
d. Place auxiliary hydraulic press (010h) between the thrust washer (010f) and yoke (010g). Unscrew thrust bolt (010k) on auxiliary hydraulic press, then screw in hexagon bolt or handwheel, as equipped, of the yoke until it abuts the pressure cylinder of the auxiliary hydraulic press
e. Screw in thrust bolt (010k) on the auxiliary press unit until the shaft flange pressed out
- Only tighten pressure screw of auxiliary hydraulic press (maximum torque 60 Nm) until the rear axle shaft flange is pressed out. apply a settling blow to the yoke with a hammer as soon as 30 Nm is reached.
- If the travel is insufficient on the first stroke, the thrust bolt (010k) is turned back and the hexagon bolt or hand wheel as equipped, adjusted at he yoke
CAUTION:
^ Screw in thrust bolt (010k) to a maximum torque of 60 Nm (corresponds to a pull out force of 20 tons)
^ If this pull out force is insufficient, the complete wheel carrier with axle shaft must be replaced.
^ The extractor may be destroyed if maximum torque is exceded.
4. Remove the two row angular ball bearing inner race from axle flange as follows:
a. Screw correct collet chuck onto puller tool No. 001 589 50 33 00, or equivalent,
b. Secure axle shaft flange in a vise with suitable soft jaws
c. Place thrust piece (010e) with large diameter on the rear on the rear axle shaft flange
d. Install assembled pulling device tool No. 001 589 50 33 00, or equivalent over inner bearing race
- Clamp the collet chuck at the upper grooves via the conical sleeve of the puller
e. Pull inner bearing race off rear axle shaft flange using pulling device and remove
5. Remove the two row angular ball bearing from wheel carrier as follows:
a. Remove snap ring retaining bearing to wheel carrier
b. Install puller/installer tool No. 124 589 05 43 00 or 140 589 08 43 00, or equivalents with attachments (08a, 08b, 08c and 08e) through bearing as shown in the illustration
c. Pull bearing (8) from wheel carrier
INSTALLATION
1. Assemble puller/installer tool with new bearing into wheel carrier as shown in the illustration
2. Pull two row angular ball bearing fully into wheel carrier
3. Insert locking snap ring into groove to retain bearing
4. Assemble puller/installer tool with axle shaft flange as shown in the illustration
5. Pull axle shaft flange into bearing
6. Install rear axle shaft, tighten twelve point collared nut to: 220 Nm
- Stake twelve point collared nut to axle with with a suitable shop made tool
7. Install brake components
8. Install wheel
