Campaign No. 1998070002

October 1998

TO: ALL MERCEDES-BENZ PASSENGER CAR DEALERS

SUBJECT:
MODEL 170 (with automatic transmission)
TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE PART NUMBER, 0205459632, INCORRECT VERSION CODE

The transmission control module version code in the affected vehicles may be incorrect. Most affected vehicles within the chassis end number range were corrected by the VPC prior to dealer delivery, however, 322 vehicles were delivered to the customer and must be corrected. During the vehicle's next service visit, check the chassis end range number in V.M.I. to determine if the transmission control module version code has already been corrected. If not, use the HHT to check the transmission control module for the proper version code of e33. If the version code is not correct, you may perform only one of the following.

1 Copy the e33 version code from another SLK transmission control module of the same part number into the customer vehicle's transmission control module.

2 Order a new transmission control module from the Baltimore PDC. Only the Baltimore PDC is equipped to version code the transmission control module.

Effective Serial Number

Note:
After performing the repair, attach the service campaign sticker on the A pillar door post near the hinge with the marking 1998070002, indicating that the vehicle has been repaired.
