Optical Fiber, Purpose/Function
Purpose
Optical data transmission between components (e.g. telephone, TELE AID, CD changer, radio, amplifier)
Function
The optical fiber is made of plastic with a fiber diameter of 1 mm. Each optical fiber is protected against mechanical damage and the entrance of external light by an orange-colored insulation. The light for data transmission in the D2B has a wavelength of 650 nm (unit: nanometer), for comparison, visible light goes from blue at 400 nm to red at 800 nm. Optical damping of the light signal may occur in the optical fiber.
Damping depends on:
- the length of the cables between the components
- bending radii when installing (minimum bending radius 25 mm)
- condition of the optical fiber insulation (mechanical damage, pinching)
- passive connectors:
These are used when a component is removed from the D2B ring circuit due to failure. The ring can be closed again with the passive connector to ensure that the remaining components can function.
