SRS Function

The emergency tensioning retractors, front and rear airbags, side airbags and window airbags are actuated during a crash when a certain acceleration/deceleration is exceeded within the set collision angle. For this purpose the airbag control module (N2/7) actuates exactly those airbag/emergency tensioning retractors required for the type and severity of the accident in order to provide the best possible protection for the passengers. The information received from the front passenger seat occupied recognition sensor with automatic child seat recognition (B48) as well as the switch positions of the seat belt buckle switches (USA only) are also taken into consideration. At the same time the safety components are actuated the airbag control module (N2/7) sends an analog crash signal to the engine control module (ME-SFI) (N3/10) (gasoline engines) or the EDS control module (N39/2) (diesel engines). The affected control module then shuts off the engine.

Moreover, the airbag control module (N2/7) sends a digital crash signal to the emergency call system control module (TELEAID) (A35/8).

Malfunctions in the SRS system as well as the front passenger seat occupied recognition sensor with automatic child seat recognition (B48) are indicated by the SRS malfunction indicator lamp (A1e15) in the instrument cluster.

The front passenger seat Occupied Recognition Sensor with automatic child seat recognition (B48) prevents actuation of the safety equipment on the front passenger side under certain conditions. Proper function of the system as well as deactivation of the passenger airbag is indicated by the automatic child seat recognition warning lamp (N72e1).

NOTE: The airbag locations are marked with the words "SRS airbag". On vehicles with window airbags, the words "SRS Airbag" are located on the B and C-pillar paneling below the roof.
