INSTALLATION OF CELLULAR TELEPHONE (CTEL) SYSTEM
Warning:
Disconnect and cover negative battery terminal.
Note:
If a CD changer is also to be installed refer to WI 399.
A. Installing 3-watt booster and Portable Support Electronics (PSE) module.
1. Unpack contents of installation kit and compare to parts list at end of Work Instructions. Read through entire procedure to familiarize yourself with sequence of instructions and parts. Remove Operating Guide from kit and place in Owner's Literature pouch.
2. Remove left trunk panel.
3. Remove protective caps from studs on the bottom of the floor in the left side of the trunk. Install clip to longitudinal rail over existing hole (pre-installed on some vehicles).
4. Connect coax cable to vehicle antenna splitter terminal
5. Cut an opening approx. 1.5" x 2" in forward lower section of the left trunk liner panel and route antenna coax cables (2), 25-pole connector and fiber optic (D2B) cables through opening while replacing the panel (Figure 1).
Note:
If the Mercedes-Benz CD changer is also to be installed, its bracket will be used for the telephone. The telephone components mount on the outer wall of the CD bracket. The base bracket supplied with the telephone is NOT required.
6. Place the base bracket (basket) over the 2 studs on the bottom of the floor in the left side of the trunk and secure with 2 nuts. Secure additionally with 2 screws into sheet metal clips in longitudinal railing.
Note:
If CD changer will be installed it will be mounted on the same assembly.
7. Place Portable Support Electronics module into mounting plate (optical connector facing up). Secure with 4 - M4 x 6 screws.
8. Install booster into recess in mounting plate, and secure using 4 - M4 torx screws.
9. Connect the 25-pole connector labeled "PSE" to portable support electronics module, and 25-pole connector labeled "Booster" to the 3-watt booster.
10. Connect coax cable from console to booster connector adjacent to the 25-pole connector.
11. Connect coax cable from antenna to booster connector labeled "Antenna" using the SAP to mini - UHF adaptor.
Note:
Ensure that the coax cable connections to the booster are properly connected. DO NOT REVERSE!
12. Connect 25-pole pre-wire harness to 25-pole pigtail from booster and PSE module.
13. Remove protective caps and connect fiber optic cable to the connector receptacle on the side of the PSE module. When installed orientation of the connector will be on top of the PSE module.
Note:
Refer to the attached SI for the correct configuration of D2B fiber optics. If both the CD changer and the cellular phone are to be installed, an additional fiber optic cable provided in the kit must be utilized.
14. Place completed assembly over base bracket (basket) and secure with 4 MS screws.
15. Place trunk bracket cover over telephone components and secure with 2 M4 self tapping torx screws.
B. Installing portable handset (HS)
1. Remove styrofoam-backed carpeted floor piece from the center console storage compartment.
2. Using template from the installation kit (or cut piece of a card board with the dimensions shown in the diagram below), mark and cut away foam under the front portion of the carpeted floor piece (Figure 2). Place the template on top of the floor piece, mark and drill 4 (5 mm dia) holes for mounting cradle on bracket (Figure 3).
3. Remove two forward screws in center console storage compartment.
4. Place cradle mounting bracket in console with wider section of the bracket pointing towards the rear of the compartment. Secure bracket using the two removed screws (Figure 4).
5. Connect RJ-45 and coax connectors from coil cord to connectors on floor of compartment.
6. Replace floor piece, routing the cables along left side of compartment (cut a small notch on the left side of the storage compartment floor piece for cables access).
Place cradle on top of carpeted storage floor piece and secure it to the cradle mounting bracket underneath with 4 self tapping screws.
Note:
When installing CTEL together with a CD changer:
^ Install Portable Support Electronics and booster modules as directed above.
^ Secure bracket to CD bracket using 2 - M5 x 6 screws.
^ Connect phone components as described above.
^ Continue with CD changer installation.
7. Reconnect battery. Program phone and test function. Verify correct version coding and system configuration using HHT.
