Front Suspension






REMOVAL
1. Remove front wheel
2. Remove front spring (12).
3. Disconnect Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) sensor connectors (X62/19) and left front brake pad wear sensor connector (S10/1x1) in component compartment, then remove front axle cable set through the wheel house

WARNING:
^ Risk of poisoning due to consuming brake fluid.
^ Risk of injury due to brake fluid contacting the skin or eyes.
^ Only pour brake fluid into suitable, appropriately marked containers.
^ Wear protective clothing and safety glasses when handling brake fluid.

4. Unscrew brake hose (39) from brake pipe
- Protect pipes against contamination with suitable covers and caps
5. Remove stabilizer bar from lower wishbone
6. Using puller (050) tool No. 202 589 02 33 00 and thrust piece (051) tool No. 129 589 10 63 00, or equivalents, remove track rod ball joint (10) from steering knuckle
- Check rubber boot and ball joint for damage and wear
7. Unscrew shock absorber (47) at upper fixing
8. Remove the lower engine compartment lining





9. Using a suitable jack or stand, support lower wishbone (4), remove nuts (19b and 20b) and bolts (19 and 20) and remove from frame floor
10. Using puller(043) and thrust piece (043a) remove steering knuckle (5) from upper wishbone (6). Service and Repair
- Check rubber boot and ball joint for damage and wear
11. Remove front axle half
12. Remove upper wishbone

INSTALLATION
- Install in reverse order, noting the following:
- Replace self-locking bolts and nuts
- Bleed front brake system, refer to Brakes and Traction Control
- Perform chassis alignment check.

CAUTION: Tighten components to specifications only with vehicle sitting in ready-to-drive condition

- Tighten the following components as noted:
- Front axle stabilizer bar self-locking nut for fixing bracket on wishbone: 20 Nm
- Nut, shock absorber on front end: 18 Nm
- Lock Nut, shock absorber on front end: 30 Nm
- Self-locking nut of upper wishbones on steering knuckles: 45 Nm
- Self-locking nut of lower wishbones on frame: 120 Nm
- Brake pipe on brake hose: 14 Nm
- Self-locking nut of track rod ball joint on steering knuckle: 50 Nm
