Complete Rear Suspension









NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

REMOVAL
- Refer to Service Precautions for important information prior to starting repairs
- Refer to the illustration above and the information below during removal procedures
- Drain rear axle oil
- Support suspension with a suitable support
- Remove front and rear rear axle suspension bolts (1c and 1d)
- Remove spring link cover (6g)
- Remove rear spring (6i), refer to Coil Spring, Suspension
- On models with level control, remove spring strut (6j) at spring link end, refer to Level Control Systems
- On models less level control, remove shock absorber (6j) at spring link end
- Remove stabilizer bar connecting rod (6k)
- Remove, install exhaust system (105) from flange connection
- Remove exhaust shield (105c)
- Remove propeller shaft at joint flange, support propeller shaft on reinforcement bracket
- Remove propeller shaft intermediate bearing (106a)
- Unhook, hook up parking brake control cables on automatic cable length compensator (110b) or intermediate lever
- Remove brake hose (111e) on frame floor
- Seal and plug lines and fittings
- Unhook fuel pump assembly (115) from rubber rings and secure with a wire
- Remove fuel pump assembly cover (140)
- Remove rear axle speed sensor (L6)
- Remove, left and right rear axle speed sensor (L6/3 and L6/4)
- Disconnect, connect 2-pin connector (X36/3) of fuel pump wiring harness
- Disconnect rear left and right connector (X62/1 and X62/3) of speed sensor/brake lining
- Connector located in trunk
- Disconnect 2-pin connector for ABS speed sensor, rear
- Connector located in trunk


INSTALLATION
- Install in reverse order, noting the following information:
- Chase thread on frame floor front and rear rear axle suspension bolts (1c and 1d) using a suitable tap
- Hook up parking brake control cables on automatic cable length compensator (110b) or intermediate lever
- Clean magnetic tip of rear axle speed sensor, replace O-ring
- Replace all self-locking bolts and nuts
- Bleed the brake system
- On models with level control, check vehicle level at rear axle
- On all models, check, correct headlamp adjustment
- Fill rear axle oil with 1.1 liters of suitable rear axle fluid
- Tighten the following components as noted:
- Self-locking nut for attaching stabilizer bar connecting rod (6k) to spring link to: 20 Nm
- Self-locking nut for attaching shock absorber to spring link to: 55 Nm
- Self-locking nut, spring strut of level control to spring link to: 55 Nm
- Self-locking bolt (1c) of front rubber mount of rear axle carrier to frame floor to: 90 Nm
- Self-locking bolt (1d) of rear rubber mount of rear axle carrier to frame floor to: 90 Nm
- Self-locking nut of flexible disk on rear propeller shaft or rear axle center assembly:
- 10 mm bolts: 40 Nm
- 10 mm bolts: 60 Nm
- Hexagon bolts, propeller shaft intermediate bearing to frame floor:
- Bolt with washer: 25 Nm
- Bolt with collar and centering tip: 30 Nm
