a. Tighten the collared bolts (arrows) securely to 50 Nm
b. Place contact arm (059) on expanding device for expanded dimension measurement and press against the two pins from below
- Set dial gauge on "0" with 3 mm preload
- The stop pin (arrow) of the contact arm must abut the bearing surface of the rear axle housing
c. Turn straight surface (arrow) of the thrust piece towards the opening of the locking ring (29)
d. Screw in threaded shaft (058a) by hand, until the thrust piece abuts the tapered roller bearing outer race
e. Screw in the threaded shaft (058a) of the expanding device, until the rear axle housing has achieved an expanded dimension of 0.10-0.13 mm.
CAUTION: Do not exceed the specified expanded dimension when expanding
f. Remove contact arm (059)
g. Remove left locking ring (29) from the rear axle housing using circlip pliers (064)
- Place match marks on locking ring for later assembly
h. Remove right locking ring (29) from rear axle housing
- Place match marks on locking ring for later assembly
i. Release load on rear axle housing and remove expanding device
7. Using Installation punch tool No. 116 589 18 61 00, or equivalent, remove both tapered roller bearing outer races (11a) from rear axle housing as follows:
a. Plug in the assembly mandrel (046) for differential bevel gears on the right side and turn the complete differential anti-clockwise until this abuts the rear axle housing.
b. Remove left and right tapered roller bearing outer race (11a)
c. Place match mark on tapered roller bearing outer races for later assembly
8. Move differential (13) into the position shown, then remove differential from the rear axle housing
9. Using puller tool No. 123 589 08 33 00, or equivalent, disconnect both tapered roller bearing inner races (11b) from differential (13)
- Place match mark on tapered roller bearing outer races for later assembly
10. Loosen and detach locking bolts (13a) from crown wheel
- Mark position of the crown wheel relative to the differential for later assembly alignment
11. Using a suitable press with appropriate press tools, carefully press crown wheel (47a) off of differential (13) housing
12. Loosen and unscrew hexagon collared nut (40) on joint flange (41) as follows:
NOTE: To improve guidance when loosening the hexagon collared nut, press shop-made bush shown in illustration above into the commercially available 41 mm wrench socket
a. Mount pin wrench tool No. 129 589 01 07 00 (040), or equivalent, on joint flange (41)
b. To loosen collared nut, do not unlock the crimped collared locking device of the hexagon collared nut
c. Loosen hexagon collared nut using commercially available wrench socket (040a) and remove
13. Remove joint flange from drive pinion using puller tool No 129 589 01 33 00 (062), or equivalent, if necessary.
- Place match marks on joint flange relative to drive pinion for later assembly alignment
14. Press drive pinion (47) out of rear axle housing using puller tool No. 000 589 65 33 00 (065), or equivalent, and remove.
- When pressing out, hold drive pinion and puller securely.
15. Press radial seal ring (42) out of rear axle housing using a suitable pry bar
16. Remove tapered roller bearing inner race (43d)
17. Remove tapered roller bearing outer races (46b, 43e) from rear axle housing as follows:
a. Install removal and installation tool No. 121 140 589 10 43 00 (038), or equivalent, on rear axle housing
b. Withdraw the large tapered roller bearing outer race (46b) from rear axle housing with thrust piece (038a) part 16
c. Press out the small tapered roller bearing outer race (43e) with thrust piece (038b) part 18
d. Detach removal and installation tool
18. Remove shim (45)
19. Remove spacer sleeve (44) with bearing washers (48) from drive pinion
20. Disconnect tapered roller bearing inner race (46a) from drive pinion (47) as follows:
a. Assemble puller basic puller unit tool No. 001 589 50 33 00 (024) with extension tool No. 000 589 63 34 00 (024c) and clamping collet tool No. 000 589 02 34 00 (024a), or equivalents, and tighten securely.

c. Using the puller (024), pull tapered roller bearing inner race off the drive pinion (47)and remove
21. Check ail parts for re-usability and replace as necessary
- If there are deep scores on the contact surface of the connecting flange and joint flange due to the radial seal ring, the flanges are to be replaced.
- Check drive pinion (47) and crown wheel (47a) for pairing number
- Each gear set has been checked for optimum smooth running and is identified with a sequential pairing number which is written on both parts
