AR42.10-P-1600CM Remove/Check/Install Front Axle Brake Pads

Removing, Checking And Installing Front Axle Brake Pads

Checking
1 Check lining thickness of brake pads and condition of brake discs.

CAUTION: If the brake pads are worn down beyond the permissible wear limit, the web between sealing groove and dust cap may be damaged, for this reason, check brake system for leaks with pressure tester.

Removing, installing
2 Remove front wheels
3 Detach spring (31d)
4 Pull contact sensor (S10/1) out of connector (S10/1x1)
5 Pull covers (31b) off guide pins
6 Unscrew guide pins (31c)
7 Remove floating caliper (31a) with brake pads (31g)

NOTE:
- Only complete sets of brake pads (31g) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
- Brake pads (31g) are to be disposed of as special waste. The local authorities will be able to inform you of whether they may also be disposed of as domestic-type industrial refuse.
- Installation: Insert inner brake pad(31g) with riveted springs (arrows) into piston, insert outer brake pad into brake carrier (33) and install floating caliper (31a).

8 Pull contact sensor (S10/1) out of pad backplate of brake pad (31g)

NOTE: Replace faulty contact sensor (S10/1). Always install contact sensor (S10/1) on inner brake pad.

Checking
9 Check floating caliper (31a) for leaks and dust seal for damage
- Visual inspection: replace floating caliper if necessary or, depending on the vehicle model, repair floating caliper

10 Press back piston (47) using resetting device (031)

CAUTION:
- Draw off some brake fluid beforehand to prevent the brake fluid reservoir overflowing when pressing back the piston (47).
- Press back pistons one at a time. Fix piston not being pressed using a second resetting device (031).
- If the piston is difficult to move: Replace floating caliper or, depending on the vehicle model, repair floating caliper on front axle

11 Clean contact surface of brake pad (31g) in brake carrier (33) and floating caliper (31a)
12 Install in the reverse order

DANGER:
- Risk of accident when the vehicle is first operated following repair work due to inadequate braking effect the first time the service brake is applied.
- Before driving the vehicle, operate the brake pedal several times until pressure in the brake system is built up and maintained.

13 Operate brake pedal several times until brake pads make contact with brake discs (firm resistance can be felt).

CAUTION:
- Risk of poisoning from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury from skin and eye contact with brake fluid
- Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.

14 Check brake fluid in brake fluid reservoir and correct if necessary.

CAUTION:
- Top up or extract brake fluid until it is at max, marking on brake fluid reservoir.
- See notes on brake fluid
