Power Steering Noise
If you encounter instances in the above vehicles within VIN range X032000 up to X077949 of horn-like power steering noises while turning the wheel, the high-pressure power steering hose should be replaced with a modified hose. In such instances, hydraulic vibrations in the high-pressure power steering circuit can excite the control valve torsion bar and may cause a horn-like noise while turning the steering wheel. This noise will only occur when the steering gear is extremely warm.
1. Remove the rear bottom engine guard (4 screws).
2. Drill a 8.5 mm diameter hole in the left side longitudinal frame member (Figure 1). Do not drill through any spot welds. (Dimension A = 20 mm and B = 59 mm). Apply primer to hole.
3. Remove the shield for the left side steering rack (2 bolts) (Figure 2).
4. Remove the plastic mount for fastening the high-pressure hose to the left side longitudinal frame member (Figure 3).
5. Extract fluid from power steering pump supply reservoir. (vehicles without level control).
6. Clamp off feed line from reservoir (vehicles with level control).
7. Remove line connection from power steering pump.
8. Remove line connection from steering valve.
9. Place new high-pressure hose into position from beneath the vehicle (Figure 4).
10. Install banjo bolt with crush washers into steering valve, but only hand tight.
11. Prefasten high pressure hose on left longitudinal frame rail with clamp, spacer, nut and bolt (Figure 5).
12. Torque banjo bolt on the steering valve (32 Nm).
13. Torque the high-pressure hose on left longitudinal frame rail (20 Nm).
14. Install the heat shield for the left steering rack boot and torque.
15. Install and torque the high-pressure hose (flare fitting) to the power steering pump (45 Nm).
16. Fill the steering system and bleed. Check for leaks.
17. Install and torque the rear bottom engine guard.
