Reversing
Reversing is detected
in vehicles with manual transmission:
- via the backup lamp switch (S16/2)
in vehicles with automatic transmission:
- via the starter lockout/backup lamp switch (S16/1)
- Starter lockout/backup lamp switch (transmission range recognition) (S16/3)
- Gear recognition switch (S16/10)
The rear sensors and warning displays are only active when reversing without a trailer.
The front sensors and warning displays are active regardless of whether towing a trailer, so that obstructions within the swing-out radius of the front end of the vehicle are detected when reversing.
When reversing with a trailer, the rear sensors and warning displays are not active because otherwise the trailer would always be identified as an obstruction
The trailer is identified by means of the trailer recognition microswitch (X58s1) in the socket for the trailer coupling. If an adapter (7/13-pin) is used when towing a trailer, it must be removed when the trailer is unhitched because otherwise the system will continue to detect a trailer and leave the rear sensors and warning displays switched off.
NOTE: Trailer recognition via the trailer recognition microswitch (X58s1) is not applicable to models 203, 215 and 220 as of 5/99.
Detection range (vehicle rear):
Vehicle center: approx. 120 cm
Outside of vehicle: approx. 80 cm
Obstacles are no longer detected at ranges less than approx. 20 cm.
The detection range is divided into a left-hand and a right-hand sector, each with two sensors and one visual warning display. The acoustic signal is a common one for both rear warning displays.
NOTE: STAR Diagnosis can be used to encode different variants in the control module. For vehicles without detachable trailer coupling (models 163, 168) or with a spare wheel mounted on the rear (model 163), this allows the warning range of the sensors to be extended.
Variant coding makes it possible to adjust the warning range of the sensors to changes in the overall length of the vehicle.
