Displaying Indicator/Warning Messages Via Multifunction Display

Multifunction display (A1p13)
Various driver information is displayed in the multifunction display (A1p13).
Apart from displaying total distance and trip distance (basic display) the following system displays can also be selected and shown in the multifunction display (A1p13):
- Audio
- Telephone (special equipment)
- Navigation (special equipment)
- Trip computer

In addition various fault and warning messages can be overlaid in the multifunction display (A1p13).

Properties of warning and fault messages
- Priorities for warning and fault messages
The messages have different priorities depending on their importance. There is only one message for each priority level.
(The instrument cluster (A1) works with main and secondary priorities.)
Higher priority messages can force lower priority messages out of the display.
Highest priority messages are, for example:
- "Stop - engine oil level, switch off engine"
- All "Tire defective" messages

Lower priority messages are, for example:
- "Coolant level"
- Audio, navigation and trip computer system displays

- Minimum display time
The minimum display time is
- 1 second for system menus
- 2 seconds for fault and warning message
- 5 seconds for displays when operating
- 2 seconds for driver information

Increasing the priority
The priority of a message can be increased at the time it is triggered.
Existing higher priority messages are then forced out of the display for the period of minimum display time for the new message.

- Automatically acknowledgeable warning and fault messages
These messages disappear automatically when the cause of the message is rectified.
Examples:
- All "Tire defective" messages
- "Engine oil temperature too high"

- Manually acknowledgeable warning and fault messages
These messages are erased when the trip odometer reset button (A1s3), system select/voice control pushbutton (S110s3) or pushbutton + and - (specific function setting, volume control) (S111s1) has been pressed.
As this involves operating the controls, the minimum display time is not maintained.
Examples:
- "Bulb failure"
- "Coolant level"
There are also messages which are both acknowledgeable automatically and manually.

- Displaying message again after acknowledging
There are messages which can only be displayed again after automatic or manual acknowledgement when terminal 15 has been switched off in the meantime:
- "BAS fault (Brake Assist)"
- "Coolant level"

Other messages are also always overlaid again after acknowledgement if their cause has not yet been rectified.
Example:
- All "Tire defective" messages
- "Engine oil temperature too high"

- Warning messages with tone
A warning tone of 200 ms duration is also output for most warning messages.

NOTE: In addition a warning lamp or indicator lamp is also actuated for some messages. These lamps come on as long as there is a fault. This also applies where the associated message has been knowledged.

Once a fault message has been acknowledged the display changes to the previous display screen if there are no other faults.

Storing messages
Most warning and fault messages are stored in a toroidal-core store in the instrument cluster (A1) after acknowledgment. Messages which have not been acknowledged are automatically added to the toroidal-core store after terminal 15r is OFF.

Displays of warning and fault messages
With a few exceptions (e.g. light reminder, key reminder) messages are only displayed when the engine is running.

- Current messages
Current messages are overlaid immediately.

- Several current messages
- If there are several faults, the messages alternate every 3 seconds.

- Reminder of acknowledged messages
If messages were acknowledged while driving, these are displayed again as a reminder when terminal 15r is OFF. In the process, current messages e.g. light reminder fade out this reminder function.
If there are no messages, the basic display appears after terminal 15r is OFF.

- Displaying stored fault messages
When the instrument cluster (A1) is activated the stored messages can be paged:
- Press the system select/voice control push button (S111s3) until the "--FAULTS" display appears in the multifunction display (A1p13).
- Page the fault messages with the pushbutton + and - (specific function setting, volume control) (S110s1). The messages are displayed in their priority order.

Example
Four possible messages are illustrated below, together with a brief description.
When there are several faults the sequence of the messages displayed is explained by means of an example:
- The windshield washer fluid level has dropped below the minimum mark. The message CHECK WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID LEVEL" (figure 1) is displayed in the multifunction display.
- If another fault now occurs in the generator (G2), the message "BATTERY/GENERATOR CHECK - FIND A WORKSHOP" (figure 2) is displayed. This message fades out the first message on account of its higher priority.
- If the coolant level now drops below the minimum mark, the message "CHECK COOLANT/LEVEL" (figure 3) is overlaid for the duration of the minimum display time.
After this the message "BATTERY/GENERATOR CHECK - FIND A WORKSHOP" (figure 2) is displayed again.

If no other fault occurs, the messages alternate every 3 seconds.

In the example it was assumed that no message had been acknowledged.

Message: "CHECK WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID/LEVEL"
This message is displayed if the washer fluid for the windshield washer system and headlamp cleaning system drops below the minimum level.
For more details, see "voltage coding coolant/windshield washer fluid level, function" document. Voltage Coding of Coolant Level/Windshield Washer Fluid Level

Message: "BATTERY/GENERATOR CHECK - FIND A WORKSHOP"
This message is displayed if the generator (G2) is not working properly but the engine speed is more than 200 rpm. For more details, see "Battery charge and generator indicator, function" document. Battery Charge/Generator Check

Message: "CHECK COOLANT/LEVEL "
This message is displayed if the coolant has dropped below the minimum level.
For more details, see "Voltage coding coolant/windshield washer fluid level, function" document. Voltage Coding of Coolant Level/Windshield Washer Fluid Level

Message: "DISPLAY DEFECTIVE/FIND A WORKSHOP"
This message is displayed if there is a fault in the CAN/engine compartment and as a result the connection to several control modules is faulty.
If the connection to only one control module is faulty the symbol of the particular system is overlaid at position (2).
