Remaining Distance Function

Immediately after the oil change reset with Otto engines (constant cycle engines) the remaining mileage is 15000 km or 10000 miles and 20000 km with diesel engines.
The remaining mileage calculated during service intervals depends very much on the initial mileage.

Initial mileage
The initial mileage is defined as being the minimum distance in km or miles which can be driven up to the next servicing. However, this only applies when the engine has been filled with the specified quantity of engine oil during the oil change. The initial mileage depends on:
- the set quality factors (the quality factors have been factory-set to a basic setting. Depending on the conditions of use, they can be changed with the Start diagnosis tool.)

The initial mileage is not dependent on the driving conditions (Evaluation of distance traveled) and possible topping up of the engine oil.

The standard value is normally 15000 km or 10000 miles with Otto engines and 20000 miles with diesel engines.
Depending on the quality factors the value can, however, deviate from this.

After every oil change the oil change reset facility resets the initial mileage automatically to its starting value. The initial mileage is an internal calculating factor and cannot be displayed in the instrument cluster (A1). A display of the initial mileage is only possible with the Star diagnosis tool.
The multi-function display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1) normally shows the remaining mileage.

Remaining mileage
Immediately after the oil change the remaining mileage is the same as the initial mileage, providing the engine has been filled with the specified quantity of oil during the oil change.

The remaining mileage is the mileage from the actual km reading up to the next service. The interval value is at least equal to the remaining mileage displayed immediately after the oil change. It is, however, max. 2x the initial mileage.

The remaining mileage depends on:
- the initial mileage
- the driving conditions (An evaluation of the distance/road conditions is carried out.)
- possible topping up of oil

With ASSYST, the driving conditions are also considered:
With favorable evaluation, e.g. with:
- few cold starts,
- low engine speeds,
- minimum short distance driving,
- minimum trailer usage

and topping up of the engine oil the driver will receive a bonus, which extends the remaining mileage and, therefore, also extends the service interval.

Consideration is also given to whether or not the vehicle has actually been driven or the engine has been running at idling speed. For this, the ASSYST constantly receives data regarding the actual operating conditions of the vehicle.
- During the best evaluation only 0.6 km are computed for every km started.

During unfavorable evaluation of the distance traveled (e.g. frequent short journeys, many cold starts), the remaining mileage, and therefore the service interval, is less than that with the favorable evaluation. (prerequisite: the same quality factors)
- During the least favorable evaluation up to 3 km are computed for every km started.

The adjoining sketch (applicable to Otto engines) again graphically illustrates the initial mileage and remaining distance:
At the time of every oil change the initial and remaining mileage are set to the basic value. The normal value of 15000 km has here been set as initial mileage (upper bar) (shaded darker part) The initial mileage can deviate from 15000 km (e. g. 14000 km; shaded part), if the quality factors do not conform to the basic setting. The initial mileage can also be less than 15000 km, if the specified quantity of engine oil has not been filled in during the oil change. Immediately after the oil change, however, the remaining mileage (lower bar) is always 15000 km or 10000 miles. The service interval is also always at least 15000 km or 10000 miles.

With suitable compensation (favorable evaluation of the distances driven or after topping up of oil) the total remaining mileage, and therefore the service interval, can be increased to max. double the original mileage, in this case either 30000 km or 20000 miles (white part).

However, an initial mileage of less than 15000 km or 10000 miles will result in a reduction of the max. achievable service interval. For this see diagrams in document "Engine oil monitoring function".

Warning threshold (distance)
The Start diagnosis tool can be used to set a warning threshold of between 250 and 8000 km for the remaining mileage. This warning threshold is set differently for three different mileages. By determining the daily running distance the system sets itself to the correct annual mileage (refer to table):

If the remaining mileage undercuts the warning threshold, the remaining mileage is automatically faded in.

Display of the remaining mileage The message appears according to the setting in either km or miles in the multifunction display (A1p13) of the instrument cluster (A1):
- On driver's demand
- automatically, after reaching the warning threshold, 5 Seconds. after the starter has been turned to position "2" or the engine has been started:
The service symbol and the message: "SCOPE OF SERVICE A/B IN (XXXX) KM".
- automatically, at the end of the remaining mileage, 5 sec. after the starter switch has been turned to position "2" or the engine has been started:
The service symbol and the message "CARRY OUT SCOPE OF SERVICE A/B IN XXX KM" appears for 30 sec.
- automatically, after exceeding the remaining mileage by more than 100 km, 5 sec. after the starter switch has been turned to position "2" or the engine has been started:
The service symbol and the message "SCOPE OF SERVICE A/B XXXX KM EXCEEDED" appears for 30 sec.
A short signal tone will be given additionally.

The remaining mileage will be displayed with a breakdown of 100 km or 100 miles.

NOTE: All messages/displays are illustrated in the document "Driver information".

The remaining mileage is shown as standard. So that also drivers of vehicles with lower annual mileage are made aware of a service coming up, the time information is also always processed in the background.

The remaining mileage is compared daily with the remaining time. The display will change over and display the remaining mileage under the conditions described in the document under the heading "Remaining time function" will be indicated.

NOTE: If the ASSYST misses some measuring values, e.g. due to failure of the sensor, replacement values stored in the control modules are used.
A corresponding entry is made in the fault memory of the respective control module (injection systems control module (N3)1 traction systems control module (N47) or in the instrument cluster (Al).
