Catalyst Noise Analysis Tool (Special Tool Number W001 589 00 21 00)

If you receive customer reports in the above model vehicles of catalyst under floor noise complaints, you must use the catalyst noise tool box to perform the necessary diagnostic test and submit a test result print out (Figure 7) otherwise the warranty claim will be debited.

The Catalyst Noise Analysis Tool (Special Tool Number W001 589 00 21 00) connects to the SDS via the USB port and can only be used on Star Diagnosis Compact3. DAS 10/06 and the disc labeled "Software Installation CD of Noise Analysis Tool - Special Tool Number: W001 589 00 21 00" must be installed.

There is a misprint on the software disc which indicates the software can be used on the Star Diagnosis Basic 2 unit. There will be a separate CD released at the beginning of next month for the Star Diagnosis Basic 2 unit.

NOTE:
- The installation CD was shipped to every dealer with the DAS 10/06 Release. Any new machine received must have the installation CD installed in order for the tool to function properly
- It is required to attach the test result print out (Figure 7) that indicates the returned catalyst is "Not OK" as indicated on the test print out when submitting a warranty claim otherwise the claim will be debited. The required test result print out (Figure 7) should be submitted in the Part Return Envelope (W-420), which needs to be securely taped (Not Tied) to the faulty catalytic converter. This will ensure that the paperwork will stay with the part. Warranty claims received without proper paperwork will be debited.

1. Select ME-SFI 2.8 (Figure 1).
2. Select Troubleshooting by means of complaints or symptoms (Figure 2).
3. Select Noises in firewall and (or) floor area (Figure 3).
4. Start the engine and turn off AC.
5. Install "RED" clamp wire to RIGHT side (passenger side) of the pipe (before the cat) (Figure 4).
6. Install "BLUE" clamp wire to LEFT side (driver side) of the pipe.
7. If present, remove the bracket between the left and the right catalytic converters as this can transfer the noise between catalytic converters.
8. Connect other end of wire to the tool interface.
9. Connect USB cable from tool interface to SDS machine.

10. Hit F2.
11. Enter the vehicle and control rpm in between 2300 and 2700 (Figure 5).
12. Follow the test corridor on the display for the remainder of the test (Figure 6). When finished, hit F11 for test result print out (Figure 7).
13. The test printout will give a result for both the left and right catalyst. The result indicated will either be "OK" or "Not OK".
14. If the result is OK, the catalyst should not be replaced and will not be covered under warranty.
15. If the result for the left, right or both catalysts is Not OK, please print out the test results (Figure 7), submit it in a Part Return Envelope (W-420), which needs to be securely taped (not tied) to the faulty catalytic converter and send to the QEC. This will ensure that the paperwork will stay with the part. Warranty claims received without proper paperwork will be debited.

16. Replace the bracket between the left and the right catalytic converter after the repair (if required) or upon completion of the test.

Special Tools
