Antenna System (ATS) (Vehicles With Comand)

Block Diagram Of Antenna System:

Preliminary remarks
This document describes primarily the audio, TV, telephone and navigation antenna system for vehicles with the COMAND cockpit management and data system.

General
The antennas described are designed for their special reception and transmitting ranges.

It is necessary to differentiate between passive and active antennas:

Passive antennas do not require a power supply, they are not capable of directly amplifying the radio signals received.
Examples:
- All antennas in rear window
- CTEL antenna (A2/49a1)

Active antennas are supplied with power. They are equipped with an integrated amplifier:
Example:
- GPS antenna (A2/49a2)

The power is supplied by separate leads or by the coaxial leads with which the actual signals are transmitted simultaneously (so-called phantom feed). In this case separate leads for the power supply are not required.

Another difference between the antennas is that some antennas serve only for reception and others are able to receive as well as transmit.
Examples:
Receiving only:
- GPS antenna (A2/49a2)

Transmitting and receiving:
- CTEL antenna (A2/49a1)
