Emission System Maintenance Jobs
Note to Vehicle OwnerThe composition of exhaust emissions is influenced not only by special emission control equipment, but also by various engine components and their adjustments. Therefore, emission system maintenance include these engine components. Some maintenance jobs are actually only tests. They are important however, because they allow early detection of discrepancies which can later lead to increased exhaust emissions. It is generally less expensive to have such items adjusted immediately rather than allowing them to contribute to costly repairs.
The maintenance intervals have been determined so that the vehicle, under normal conditions, should operate properly between services.
Engine Oil and Filter Change: Change the engine oil and filter at least once a year. If oil consumption should increase, determine the cause and take necessary corrective steps. Reset the FSS counter.
Check Injection Timing, Diesel Engine: The "start of fuel injection" has to be checked only once at 30,000 miles or 4 years.
Replace Main Fuel Filter, Diesel Engine: Approx. every 60,000 miles or 4 years.
Replace Fuel Prefilter, Diesel Engine: Approx. every 60,000 miles or 4 years.
Replace Fuel Filter, Gasoline Engine *: Approx. every 60,000 miles or 4 years.
Replace Air Filter Element: Approx. every 60,000 miles or 4 years under normal dust conditions. Clean filter housing and cover.
Check Poly-V-Belt Condition: Check for cracks and wear. Replace as necessary.
Replace Spark Plugs: According to schedule below.
Spark Plug Replacement Schedule
- Every 30,000 mile or 4 years: SLK 230 (111 supercharged engine)
- Every 45,000 mile or 4 years: S320 and C230 (104 and 111 engine, except supercharged - see SLK 230)
- Every 60,000 mile or 4 years: S420, CL500, S500 and SL500 with 119 engine; CL600, S600 and SL600 with 120 engine (V12).
- Every 100,000 mile or 4 years: C280, CLK320, E320 and E430 with 112 and 113 engines; ML320 and ML430.
