Removing and Installing Adjusting Screw
Removing and Installing Adjusting Screw on Steering Gear with Adjusting Screw Below (Model 129, 124.034/036):- Remove steering gear, if not already done.
- Follow the procedure of removing and checking the "bearing cover with pitman arm shaft" before proceeding with this procedure.
After the above two criteria are met, proceed as follows:
- Remove locking ring (101), replace if necessary.
- Press end cover (100) out.
- Remove adjusting screw (45), together with thrust washer (107), if fitted, from the steering gear housing.
The adjusting screw (45) should be installed free of play, if possible. Thrust washers (107) are available for this purpose in thicknesses from 0.85-1.15 mm in graduations of 0.05 mm.
- Examine 0-ring (3) for signs of damage and wear, replace if necessary.
- Examine Needle bearing (99) in steering gear housing for bearing needles which may have dropped out (32 needles), insert bearing needles with grease, if necessary.
- Check pitman arm shaft for damage and wear and for twisting (detectable by displaced teeth) on toothed sector and at the bearing points.
