Complete Rear Suspension









WARNING:
^ Risk of poisoning due to swallowing brake fluid.
^ Risk of injury due to contact with brake fluid or brake fluid splashing in the eyes
^ Only pour brake fluid into and store in original containers
^ Wear protective clothing and safety glasses


NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.

REMOVAL
- During removal procedures refer to the illustrations above and the notes below.
- Drain rear axle oil.
- Remove (6g) spring link cover.
- Remove (6i) rear spring, refer to Spring Replacement. Service and Repair
- Remove (6j) shock absorber or spring strut (as equipped). Service and Repair
- Remove at spring link
- Remove (6k) stabilizer bar connecting rod. Service and Repair
- Remove (6i) guide rail on spring link as follows:





Unclip electric cable of wear indicator (arrows)
Press out plastic pins, pull back guide rail (6l) and remove from above.

- Vehicles with ASR, ETS, ESP
- Remove (36) both frame cross braces, refer to Body and Frame.
- Remove (105) complete exhaust system, refer to Exhaust System
- (105c) Exhaust heat shield
- Remove (106) propeller shaft at joint flange, refer to Drive/Propeller Shaft
- (106a) Propeller shaft intermediate bearing
- (108) Tunnel closing plate
- Remove (110b) idler lever of parking brake, refer to Brakes and Traction Control
- Remove (111e) brake hose on frame floor
- Seal openings
- Disconnect (115a) fuel suction hose
- Collect any remaining fuel
- Remove (120) connecting rod at level sensor (Vehicles with ADS).
- Remove (140) fuel pump assembly cover
- Remove (L6) rear axle speed sensor, refer to Brakes and Traction Control
- Clean magnetic blade
- Replace O-ring
- Vehicles with ASR, ETS, ESP, remove (L6/3, L6/4) left and right rear axle speed sensor
- Remove (X62/8) connector at rear axle distributor
- Remove (X62/8a) cable guide rail

INSTALLATION
- Reverse removal procedures to install, noting the following:
- Fill rear axle with suitable oil
Models with 6 cylinder engine: 1.3 liters
Models with 8 and 12 cylinder engine: 1.4 liters
- Replace self locking bolts and nuts
- Bleed brake system
- Check vehicle level at rear axle
- Re tap thread (1c, 1d) on frame floor using tap
- Rear axle speed sensor (L6)
- Clean magnetic blade
- Replace O-ring
- Tighten the following components as noted:
- Rear axle stabilizer bar connecting rod to spring link: 20 Nm
- Rear axle shock absorber/Spring strut Self-locking nut to spring link: 55 Nm
- Rear axle carrier self-locking bolt of front and rear rubber mount to frame floor: 70 Nm
- Propeller shaft:
- Self-locking nut, on flexible disk to rear propeller shaft or rear axle center assembly:
- 10 mm: 40 Nm
- 12 mm: 60 Nm
- Propeller shaft intermediate bearing to frame floor
- Bolt with washer: 25 Nm
- Bolt with collar and centering tip: 30 Nm
- Self-locking bolt, rear cross brace to frame floor: 120 Nm
- Self-locking bolt, tunnel closing plate to frame floor: 25 Nm
