Replace Rear Axle Spring Strut

NOTE: Numbers in parentheses ( ) indicate a component or tool in the associated illustration.
WARNING:
^ Risk of Injury to skin or eyes due to hydraulic fluid spraying out under high pressure
^ Risk of poisoning due to consuming hydraulic fluid
NOTE:
^ Before starting work on the hydraulic system, depressurize the system
^ Wear protective clothing and safety gasses
REMOVAL
1. Detach upper spring strut fixing
- The vehicle must be on its wheels for removing the upper spring strut fixing
- Steady spring strut (5) in wheel house
- Remove washer (5b) and rubber mound (5c)
2. Raise vehicle, then remove rear wheels
3. Empty pressure oil system at rear axle
4. Disconnect pressure line (P4) from spring strut
5. Detach spring link cover (72c)
NOTE: Note position between pressure hose bracket on spring strut tube and wheelhouse for later assembly
6. Detach and remove spring strut (5) at spring link (72)
WARNING:
^ Risk of injury from drilling gas-filled units or components (gas fill is not inflammable)
^ Wear safety glasses and safety mask
7. Dispose of shock-absorber strut, if required, refer to Disposing Of Spring Strut
INSPECTION
1. Check rubber mounts (5c, 5d), plate (5e), spring strut mount and rubber boot for damage and cracks
2. Check ball joint for wear
3. Check spring strut for leaks
- Slight oil mist is permissible
- If the joint eye is moistened with oil, replace spring strut
INSTALLATION
Reverse procedures to install, noting the following:
- Check distance between spring strut and wheel house in the ready-to-drive position, refer to Setting Location Of Rear Spring Strut
- If necessary, loosen upper spring strut fixing and align spring strut
- Check function of roll bar system
- Replace copper sealing rings on banjo bolt (5v)
- Extend spring strut so that spring strut mount contacts dome Replace self-locking nut (5n)
SPECIFICATIONS
NOTE: Position Strut Between Pressure Hose Bracket On Spring Strut Tube And Wheelhouse, refer to Check and Set Distance Between Rear Spring Strut and Wheelhouse.
At Rebound:
Left: 11-14 mm
Right: 11-14 mm
Ready-To-Drive
Left: 16-19 mm
Right: 16-19 mm
Tightening:
Nut of spring strut, level control on frame floor: 15-18 Nm
Lock nut of spring strut, level control on frame floor: 30 Nm
Self-locking nut of spring strut, level control on spring link: 55 Nm
Banjo bolt of pressure line, level control on spring strut: 25 Nm
