Component Identification:
The location of the vehicle as well as the direction and distance to the destination (are determined with the aid of the navigation system (after entering the destination). The required measures are then introduced in order to reach the destination (navigation). The navigation system is activated by pressing the "NAV" button on the radio (A2).
The radio (A2) serves as diagnostic interface with central computer, DVD drive and navigation processor with GPS [global positioning system] receiver and gyrosensor. The DVD drive can read in navigation data (digital map, voice segments and software) as well as audio CDs.
If a wrong or copied navigation DVD is loaded, this cannot be read. The message:"Please load navigation CD" appears.
Location finding
The navigation processor continuously calculates the location of the vehicle with the aid of the following procedures:
^ GPS location finding
^ Basic location finding
^ Map-supported map matching
The correct position is determined by continuously comparing the locating results of these 3 methods.
The destination is entered menu-assisted at the radio (A2) and is processed by the navigation processor. The system only enables the input of destination addresses which are stored on the DVD.
The following possibilities are available for destination entry:
^ Call up a destination stored in the destination memory
^ Menu-assisted free input of destination by means of its name (if destination is stored on the DVD)
Route calculation
The route is calculated by the navigation processor in accordance with the specified destination, or automatically, after a deviated from the suggested route has taken place.
The calculated route is stored in the navigation processor. The following route calculations can be performed on the basis of a variety of models:
^ Fastest/shortest route
^ With/without highway
^ With/without toll
^ With/without ferry
^ Dynamic route calculation by taking into account the current traffic situation (RDS/TMC [traffic message channel] or telematics services)
^ Shutting off roads or stretches manually (traffic jam button)
^ Display of destination distance and provisional arrival time
^ Interim destination can be selected
^ Route can be selected (e.g. Munich to Hamburg via Stuttgart)
Route guidance
After the navigation processor has calculated the route, route guidance is started. In the process the driver is continuously informed with the help of navigation symbols which are shown on the display of the radio (A2) and is informed by voice outputs via the vehicle speakers.
Once the route data is loaded the navigation DVD can be removed and an audio CD loaded. This system function enables audio CDs to be played during navigation.
