Measuring, boring and honing cylinder bores

Remove/Install

1 Measure cylinder bore

NOTE: Measure cleaned cylinder bores with an internal measuring instrument at the 3 measuring points (1, 2, 3) in longitudinal (A) and transverse direction (B).

2 Set honing machine for pre-honing
3 Cylinder bore pre-honing

NOTE: With full honing oil feed.

4 Measure cylinder bore.

NOTE: Immediately after pre-honing, an oversize of approx. +0.02 mm is obtained because of heating.

5 Set honing machine for precision honing
6 Cylinder bore precision honing

NOTE: with full honing oil feed.

7 Measure cylinder bore

NOTE: Immediately after precision honing, an oversize of approx. +0.01 mm is obtained because of heating.

8 Chamfer cylinder bore

NOTE: Except Model 463.

9 Set honing machine for polishing.
10 Polish cylinder bore

NOTE: Polish with full honing oil feed up to repair final dimension.

11 Measure cylinder bore

NOTE: Allow crankcase to cool down to approx. 20 degrees C before measuring.

12 Clean cylinder bore and dry
13 Set honing machine for lapping

NOTE: On same diameter as after polishing (final diameter).

14 Rub in cylinder bore and felt insert with silicone carbide paste

NOTE: The cylinder wall must be dry. Only the specified silicone carbide paste may be used. Only this one guarantees the specified final result.

15 Lap cylinder bore and expose silicone crystals.

NOTE: Without honing oil feed

16 Once again coat felt insert with silicon carbide paste.

NOTE: Do not coat cylinder bore.

17 Lap cylinder bore and expose silicone crystals.

NOTE: Without honing oil feed Stock removal is not measureable.

18 Clean cylinder bore and dry

CAUTION: Clean crankcase very carefully free of silicone carbide paste. If possible clean crankcase in a major assembly washing machine, so that no cylinder wall damage can occur due to other remaining residue at a later engine run.

19 Inspect cylinder bore

NOTE: Allow crankcase to cool down to approx. 20 degrees C before inspecting.
