Navigation starts after entering the destination, position finding via the Global Positioning System (GPS) and ultimate route calculation. During the navigation the driver is visually guided to the destination by means of the display on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) and acoustically by the navigation system's voice output. The navigation mode has the following map displays to select from:
- Navigation map
- Route map (display of complete route)
- 2D/3D switchover (birds-eye view)
- Display through picture in picture (split screen)
- 2D/3D intersection zoom -Lane recommendation
- Highway information
The maps can be displayed in various scales. For better orientation on the screen it is possible to choose between 2 map alignments:
- In direction of travel
- Northwards
Navigation within digitized DVD map area
During trips within the digitized map area, the following information calculated by the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is available to the user:
- The current route and position of the vehicle on a digital map (graphically depicted)
- Route list
- Distance from the destination and estimated time of arrival
- Direction recommendation
- Arrow indicating the driving direction
- Name of the road currently being traveled along
- Name of the next road into which the vehicle should turn
- Distance from the next junction (specified in units of length or as a bar graph)
