Function
Hybrid Gas Generator, Sidebag:
Functional sequence
1 When exceeding the release threshold for the sidebag, the restraint systems control module (N2/7) sends an electric ignition pulse to the ignition squib (4) in the hybrid gas generator.
2 The ignition squib ignites the solid fuel rings in the fuel chamber (2)
3 The solid fuel burns up. During this combustion process the bursting disk (5) is welded on.
4 The compressed pure gas mixture (Argon/Helium, approx. 240 bar) escapes from the pressure tank (1), mixes with the exhaust gases and is then directed into the airbag via the discharge apertures (3).
During this process, the outflowing gas is heated by the burning solid fuel, additionally increasing the gas volume.
5 Under pressure of the inflowing gas the expanding airbag forces its way out of the sidebag housing and the set breakthrough area of the inside door panel and enters the interior space.
6 The airbag reaches its max. volume after approx. 20 ms.
7 On reaching its max. volume, the pressure decrease in the airbag starts immediately. The gas escapes from the airbag via a filter and the airbag collapses.
