AR46.10-P-0400P Remove/Install Jacket Tube
Remove/install Jacket Tube (Manually adjustable Jacket Tube)
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
1 Move or push adjustable steering column all the way out
NOTE: Needed for separating steering coupling (25).
2 Position steering wheel horizontal (front wheels in straight-ahead position)
CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned with the steering coupling (25) detached otherwise the contact spiral will be destroyed
3.1 Remove lower engine compartment paneling
- Vehicles with gasoline engines
3.2 Remove lower section of soundproofing capsule
- Vehicles with diesel engines
4 Detach exhaust shielding plate from firewall under the steering coupling (25), if installed.
5 Unscrew bolt (25a) from the steering coupling (25) at the lower steering shaft (80a)
6 Pull lower steering shaft (80a) up and out of steering coupling (25)
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, a lot of leverage) as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to the effects of side force.
NOTE:
- Installation: Turn rack-and-pinion steering to center position
- Slide in the lower steering shaft (80a) as far as the stop in the steering coupling (25), in the process observing the spigot of the steering coupling (25) and groove in the lower steering shaft (80a).
7 Pull the locking plate (25f) off the steering coupling (25), in the process lifting the lug with a suitable tool
CAUTION: Installation: Replace locking plate (25f) with self-locking nut Push on the locking plate (25f) until the lug engages in the steering (25)
8 Remove electric steering lock control module (N26/5)
NOTE: If necessary
9 Remove steering wheel
10 Remove clock spring contact
11 Remove cruise control switch (S40)
NOTE: Push in adjustable steering column all the way providing space for sufficiently long cable
12 Remove voice control system (VCS) switch
NOTE: Push in adjustable steering column all the way providing space for sufficiently long cable
13 Remove combination switch (S4)
NOTE: Push in adjustable steering column all the way providing space for sufficiently long cable
14 Remove switch module jacket tube (34)
15 Remove instrument cluster
16 Remove cover below instrument panel (left)
17 Remove absorber (foam balls) on left-hand side below instrument panel
18 Disconnect connector (37p) from electric steering lock control module (N26/5)
NOTE: If the electric steering lock control module (N26/5) was not removed
19 Swivel toggle (99f) forwards until it engages at the grip arm (99e)
20 Press handle arm (99e) for separating from jacket tube (71) downwards
21 Unscrew lower bolt (91 b) of steering column adjustment (80) to body
22 Unscrew upper bolts (91a) of steering column adjustment (80) on body
NOTE: Installation: Fit bolts (91a, 91b) (it must still be possible to move the jacket tube (71)) First tighten upper bolts (91a).
23 Pull the jacket tube (71) with the lower steering shaft (80a) upwards until the lug of the steering column adjustment (80) has moved out of the guide bore
24 Push down the jacket tube (71) with the steering shaft (80a) downwards and put down to the left
25 Detach jacket tube paneling (99) and unclip at the top
26 Disconnect cable strap of cables on left and right at jacket tube covering (99)
NOTE: Installation: before retightening the tie straps:
- Install combination switch (S4), cruise control switch (S40), voice control system switch (VCS),
- Push adjustable steering column all the way out,
- Ensure cable is routed correctly,
- The tie straps must be fixed in position in the recess (99b) on the side of the jacket tube paneling (99)
27 Remove jacket tube covering (99)
28 Take out jacket tube (71) with the lower steering shaft (80a) upwards
CAUTION: Do not use force, as the lower steering shaft (80a) is sensitive to forces applied from the side. The rubber sleeve remains in the firewall.
NOTE: Installation: The turn signal lugs (a) on the steering column must point to the left (arrow).
29 Install in the reverse order
30 Grease rubber sleeve at front inside firewall near bearing seat
- Klueber Polylub GLY 801 grease
