AR33.10-P-0100P Removing And Installing Front Axle

DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

CAUTION:
- If there is visible damage, e.g. cracks or deformation of the front axle carrier, these parts must be replaced
- Notes on self-locking nuts and bolts

1 Move the adjustable steering column out to maximum extension

NOTE: Necessary for separating steering coupling.

2 Switch off easy entry function for driver's seat and steering wheel
- Vehicles with memory function.

CAUTION: Otherwise the driver's seat and steering wheel move to a different position, e.g. when the driver's door is opened/closed. The upper frame can then be damaged when the retainer is installed.

NOTE:
It is switched off using the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu on the multifunction display, see vehicle owner's manual.

3 Extract oil from power steering pump supply reservoir
4 Attach engine support bracket and raise engine
5 Raise vehicle.
6 Remove the front wheels
7 Unscrew rear bolts on supporting struts
8 Unscrew engine mount bolts
9 Detach heat shield from front axle carrier
10 Rotate steering wheel into center position (front wheels in straight ahead position) and fix in position

CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned when the steering coupling is detached otherwise the contact spiral () will be destroyed

11 Carefully pull steering coupling out of control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (predetermined breaking point on control valve)

CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage)

NOTE: Installation: Turning rack-and-pinion steering to center position and fitting steering coupling M Bolt, steering coupling to steering shaft

12 Detach oil line retaining plate from rack-and-pinion steering and pull out oil lines

NOTE:
- Seal off line connections with plugs
- Installation replace O-rings

DANGER:
- Risk of poisoning from swallowing brake fluid Risk of injury from brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes
- Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid

13 Unscrew brake lines from brake hose on left and right and seal off openings

CAUTION: Seal off line connections immediately with plugs The brake fluid reservoir must not be allowed to empty completely

CAUTION:
- See notes on installing brake hoses
- Brake fluid notes
- Installation: The brake hoses must not be twisted after tightening

14 Unplug front brake pad contact sensor (S 10/1) from brake wear indicator contact sensor connector

CAUTION: Note on installing contact sensor for brake lining wear indicator

15 Detach contact sensor connector from floating caliper
16 Remove torsion bar
17 Install guard plates for brake caliper dust shields
18 Support front axle
19 Detach left and right spring struts (11) from steering knuckle

NOTE: Remove spring strut (11) if necessary

20 Disconnect left and right wheel speed sensor connectors

NOTE: Speed sensor connector in wheel housing behind spring strut

21 Unscrew bolts (1c) of front axle carrier (1)

NOTE: The bolts (1c) are self-tapping, therefore the following should be observed
- Never recut the thread in the longitudinal member
- Replace bolts
- Only use original bolts (4 ea )
- Do not position the bolts obliquely when screwing in
- Do not use an impact wrench
- Observe tightening torque

22 Lower front axle

CAUTION: Secure front axle to prevent it falling

23 Check alignment of front axle carrier (1) if necessary
24 Install in the reverse order
25 Bleed brake system.
26 Filling and bleeding power steering pump
- Vehicles without level control
- Vehicles with level control code 480

27 Perform chassis alignment check
- Only necessary after accident repair.
