Removal and Replacement
Removing And Installing Steering Gear
NOTE: Assessment of steering gear when repairing vehicles which have been involved in an accident
CAUTION: On vehicles with adjustable steering column move this out to full extent
1 Draw off fluid from the power steering pump
2 Detach aerodynamic molding
3 Remove lower engine compartment lining
4 Detach tie rod (10) from pitman arm
5 Detach drag link (11) from pitman arm
6 Remove exhaust connecting pipe
7 Remove front exhaust pipe on the left
8 Remove exhaust heat shield (23k)
9 Detach exhaust heat shields in the steering area
10 Detach front left cross brace
11 Unscrew return flow line (30f) and high-pressure stretch hose (30i)
- Seal line connections with plugs
- Model 208 with engines 112, 113: Apply the box wrench insert from the front with extension to high-pressure stretch hose (30i)
12 Remove ignition key and allow steering wheel lock to engage or remove electronic ignition key
NOTE: Model 129 as of 02/93 model 202 (vehicles with horn/airbag clock spring contact (A45)) Keep key separate
CAUTION: On vehicles with horn/airbag clock spring contact (A45) the steering wheel must not be turned when the steering gear is removed otherwise the clock spring contact will be damaged beyond repair
13 Detach steering shaft (80a) from steering coupling (25)
14 Detach ground strap from longitudinal frame member
15 Unscrew lower hexagon bolts on the left and right of the engine mounts
16 Raise engine approx 40 mm and push to the right
17 Unscrew stretch bolts (23a), carefully move steering gear (23) out of the steering shaft (80a) and remove
CAUTION: Do not use force, otherwise the lower steering shaft will be damaged on vehicles with a rigid steering column
18 Turn steering gear to center position
19 Install steering gear, moving the steering coupling (25) into the steering shaft (80a) at the same time
CAUTION: Do not use force, otherwise the lower steering shaft (collapsible tubing) will be damaged Ensure that the connection is assembled correctly
20 Bolt steering gear onto longitudinal frame member
CAUTION: On vehicles with adjustable steering column, push lower steering shaft into steering coupling
21 Lower engine and install engine mounts
22 Install ground strap on longitudinal frame member
23 Install bolt (25a) in steering coupling
24 Screw on high-pressure stretch hose (30i)
- Model 208 with engine 112, 113: Apply the box wrench insert from the front with extension
25 Screw on return flow line (30f)
26 Install heat shield (23k)
27 Attach exhaust heat shields in the steering area
28 Install exhaust connecting pipe
29 Install front exhaust pipe on the left
30 Install drag link (11) on pitman arm
31 Install tie rod (10) on pitman arm
32 Attach front left cross brace
33 Fill and bleed power steering pump
34 Check steering gear for function and leaks
NOTE: Visual inspection
35 Check ball point position
36 Check toe-in at front axle and if necessary adjust
37 Attach aerodynamic molding
38 Install lower engine compartment lining
