Variable Speed Limiter

Variable Speed Limiter:

Vehicle speed signal
is transmitted by traction system control module over CAN databus.

Models fitted with EIS control module without steering column module (SCM)
The signals of the variable cruise control switch are detected by the EIS control module and transmitted over the CAN databus.

Models not fitted with EIS control module
The signals from the variable cruise control switch are transmitted directly to the engine control module.

Models fitted with steering column module (SCM)
The signals from the variable cruise control switch are detected by the steering column module and transmitted over the CAN databus.

Function
Additional functions of cruise control are:
- variable speed limiter (VSL)
from 30 km/h (20 mph) up to maximum speed of vehicle
- permanent speed limiter
from 190 km/h (120 mph) up to maximum speed of vehicle except model 168 and models fitted with multifunction steering wheel
- The accelerator pedal must continue to be operated
- If the brakes are operated, the variable speed limiter is not switched off

1. Variable speed limiter (VSL)
The system is switched over to the variable speed limiter by moving a sliding part at the variable cruise control switch (LED in cruise control switch comes on).
The desired speed limit is set by means of the variable cruise control switch.

If the braking action from deceleration is not sufficient on a steep downhill section to maintain the speed limit, a warning signal sounds to indicate the need to operate the brakes. At ignition OFF the stored value of the variable speed limiter is retained.
Models with Distronic (DTR) are braked.

1.1 . Activating when vehicle stationary
- Engine on
- Selector lever position P
- Sliding part of cruise control switch operated so that LED comes on

Operating ACCELERATE-SET:
The lowest speed which can be set, 30 km/h or 20 mph, is indicated. The speed limit can be increased in steps of 10 km/h by operating the switch once or continuously.

Operating DECELERATE-SET:
30 km/h (20 mph) is indicated.

Operating RESUME-SET:
The speed limit last set is activated, and is then increased in stages of 1 km/h each.

Position OFF:
System switched off

1.2. Activating when driving
- Sliding part of cruise control switch operated so that LED comes on

Operating ACCELERATE-SET:
The speed limit is rounded up to the next 10 km/h value of the momentary vehicle speed, e.g. from 83 km/h to 90 km/h. The speed limit can be increased in steps of 10 km/h by operating the switch once or continuously.

Operating DECELERATE-SET:
The speed limit is rounded down to the next 10 km/h value of the momentary vehicle speed, e.g. from 83 km/h to 80 km/h. The speed limit can be reduced in steps of 10 km/h by operating the switch continuously, down to a difference of 30 km/h to the momentary vehicle speed. Any further reduction in the set speed is possible by constantly operating the switch.

NOTE: Vehicle speed is reduced.

Operating RESUME-SET:
The speed limit last set is activated. If the momentary vehicle speed is more than 30 km/h above the actual value of the speed limit, it is not possible to activate the VSL (when the cruise control switch is released, the display begins flashing for about 5 s). The VSL cannot be activated in this case otherwise the vehicle would be severely decelerated. Vehicle speed can be increased in steps each of 1 km/h.

1.3. The vehicle speed limiter is switched off by:
- Moving the cruise control switch into the position OFF
- Kickdown with accelerator pedal
- Moving the sliding part of the cruise control switch into cruise control position (LED off)

Switching off VSL with KICK DOWN:
If the difference between the speed limit and the momentary vehicle speed is less than 20 km/h and the kickdown switch is operated in this range, the VSL is switched off (example 1).

Example 1: VSL 100 km/h, actual speed 63 km/h, kickdown, VSL is then switched off.

Example 2: VSL 100 km/h. actual speed 30 km/h. kickdown up to 80 km/h, VSL remains in operation.

NOTE:
The cruise control systems with variable speed limiter are known as Speedtronic.
Models fitted with a manual transmission and VSL are equipped with a kickdown switch.

2. Programmable permanent speed limit except model 168 and models fitted with multifunction steering wheel
The permanent speed limit can be set only from 190 km/h up to the maximum speed of the vehicle. It represents the new "vehicle top speed". A speed limit set here is also always active when the VSL 15 switched off and in the cruise control mode.
If the speed of the vehicle when driving approaches the permanent set speed limit, the indication with the set value begins flashing and limits the vehicle speed. If a programmed permanent speed limit is active, the value is displayed as a flashing readout for a short time after ignition ON. If the value is set to the maximum speed of the vehicle, no indication is given.

Setting or altering the permanent speed limit:
- Selector lever in position P
- Engine OFF
- Ignition ON
- Operates sliding part of cruise control switch so that LED comes on.
- Pull cruise control switch into RESUME position
- The vehicle speed is altered in steps of 5 km/h by operating DECELERATE-SET or ACCELERATE-SET.
- Pull cruise control switch into RESUME position and hold pressed until warning buzzer sounds.
- The new speed limit is set.

Canceling permanent speed limit:
- Selector lever in position P
- Engine OFF
- Ignition ON
- Operates sliding part of cruise control switch so that LED comes on
- Pull cruise control switch into RESUME position
- previous value of permanent speed limit is displayed (flashes)
- The value of the speed limit is increased beyond the maximum speed of the vehicle (display: "-- km/h") by operating ACCELERATE-SET
- Pull cruise control switch into RESUME position
- Warning buzzer sounds
- The permanent speed limit is then canceled

NOTE: On models fitted with multifunction steering wheel and multifunction display, the permanent speed limit is replaced by the winter tire limit in the instrument cluster.
