NOTE: Assessing the steering gear when repairing a vehicle damaged in an accident
1 Extract oil from power steering pump reservoir
2 Turn steering wheel to center position (front wheels in straight-ahead position) and fix in place
CAUTION:
- On vehicles with easy entry/exit, this function must be disabled to prevent damaging the windshield, refer to: See Operator's manual.
- The steering wheel must not be turned with the steering coupling (25) detached otherwise the clock spring contact will be destroyed.
3 Remove front wheels
4 Remove lower engine compartment paneling (middle and rear)
5 Press tie rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle.
6.1 Unscrew bolt fastening steering coupling to steering shaft (25a) from steering coupling (25) at lower steering shaft
NOTE: Except model 215.376, 220.074/174/176.
6.2 Remove steering coupling
7 Insert a suitable tool in the hole in steering coupling (25) and pull lower steering shaft (80a) together with locking plate (25f) upwards and out of steering coupling (80a)
NOTE: Except model 215.376, 220.074/174/176.
CAUTION: Do not counter by holding the rubber boot or the temperature-resistant plastic disk on the lower steering shaft. Do not use force (hammer blows, excessive leverage) as the lower steering shaft is sensitive to lateral forces.
8 Unplug solenoid valve connector (40)
9 Unscrew bolts securing retaining plate to front axle earner (23a) from retaining plate (1g) at front axle carrier (1)
10 Loosen bolts securing rack-and-pinion steering to retaining plate (23g) from retaining plate (1g) of rack-and-pinion steering (23) at front axle earner (1)
11 Unscrew high-pressure expansion hose (30i) and return line (30f)
NOTE: Seal off line connections with plugs.
12 Unscrew bolts securing rack-and-pinion steering to retaining plate (23g) and take off rack-and-pinion steering (23) with retaining plate (1g)
- Check rubber mount (21) on rack-and-pinion steering mounting for damage. Replace if necessary.
Install
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
13 Insert rack-and-pinion steering (23) with retaining plate (1g) and mount at front axle earner (1) with bolts for securing retaining plate to front axle earner (23a) and bolts for securing rack-and-pinion steering to retaining plate (23g)
CAUTION: Bolts for securing retaining plate to front axle earner (23a), bolts for securing rack-and-pinion steering to retaining plate (23g), nuts and contact surfaces of the retaining plate (1g) and front axle carrier (1) must be free of oil, grease and preservatives Soften the lubricant by heating until the bolted connections can be loosened.
14 Turn rack-and-pinion steering (23) to center position
15 Push on new locking plate (25f) with self-locking nut
