Transmission 722.6
Remove/install transmission with torque converter
- with transmission 722.6
Modification Notes:
Remove/Install
1 Activate the service mode in the TELE AID emergency call system
- With TELE AID emergency call system code 347 or 855
Danger:
- Risk of explosion from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury with caustic burns to eyes and skin from battery electrolyte or from handling damaged lead-acid batteries
- No fire, sparks, naked flames or smoking Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and goggles. Pour battery electrolyte only into suitable and appropriately marked containers
2 Disconnect ground cable of battery
NOTE:
- Turn key in electronic ignition switch EIS into position "0". Key cannot be withdrawn
- Vehicle fitted with code (889) Keyless-Go: Switch off engine, remove Keyless Go cards from the vehicle and keep outside the range of the transmitter
- Installation: Read out fault memory after connecting, adjust time display on combination instrument, code radio, normalize power window and activate steering angle sensor
- Vehicles with stationary heater adjust time display on stationary heater
Danger:
- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer
3 Raise vehicle
4 Detach lower engine compartment paneling
5 Detach oil filler pipe (61) from engine only
6 Remove oil drain plug (4) at oil pan, drain transmission oil
NOTE:
- If the transmission fluid is burnt or contains wear particles, the oil cooler lines and the oil cooler must be flushed out
- Installation: Install new sealing ring
7 Remove oil drain plug (9) at torque converter, drain transmission oil
- Vehicles with oil drain plug on torque converter
Note: If the transmission oil pan contains metal shavings, drain the transmission fluid from the torque converter via the drain hole through a clean cloth.
If there are metal shavings in the cloth after draining the transmission fluid the torque converter must be replaced.
If in doubt, just rinse torque converter with transmission oil
Metal shavings may cause transmission damage later
8 Remove shield (62) and unplug connector (26)
9.1 Remove exhaust system
9.2 Remove catalytic converter
10.1 Unscrew bolts (95) securing torque converter to driven plate and take off torque converter cover (82)
10.2 Unscrew bolts (95) securing torque converter to driven plate, take off torque converter cover (81) to do this
NOTE: With engine 628, the engine cannot be cranked using the front crankshaft bolt. Continue to turn engine using compression tester so that bolts (95) securing torque converter to driven plate can be unscrewed
11 Unscrew left and right oil line (49) to oil cooler
NOTE:
- Seal line connections.
- Installation: Install new sealing rings
12 Disconnect shift rod (63) from automatic transmission, remove locking clip to do this
13 Remove exhaust bracket (64)
14 Support automatic transmission with assembly lift and transmission platform
15 Remove rear engine crossmember with engine mount (65)
16 Detach front propeller shaft (66) from automatic transmission
NOTE:
- The flexible coupling remains on the propeller shaft
- Installation: Mount the front propeller shaft on the automatic transmission
17 Loosen fitted sleeves of flexible coupling and push back propeller shaft
18 Unscrew bolts (10) from Active Body Control hydraulic line (12)
- Vehicles with code 487 (Active Body Control) to ensure that bolt (11) securing automatic transmission to crankcase can be accessed.
19 Detach automatic transmission from crankcase and remove downwards at an angle
NOTE: Secure torque converter to prevent it from falling out
20 Remove torque converter using grab handle;
NOTE: Installation: Grease crankshaft journals at torque converter lightly
21 Install in the reverse order
22 Deactivate service mode in TELE AID emergency call system
- With TELE AID emergency call system code 347 or 855
23 Perform basic programming
24 Read out fault memory with STAR DIAGNOSIS and erase if necessary
Danger:
- Risk of accident. Accidents may result if the vehicle starts off unintentionally with the engine running. Risk of injury as working around the engine during start-up or while running may result in confusions and burns
- Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not grasp hot or rotating parts
26 Inspect oil level in automatic transmission, add oil if necessary
