Timing Chain: Service and Repair
OVERVIEW
PROCEDURE
Separating Timing Chain
1 Cover over timing case with a clean cloth.
2 Screw thrust spindle (02) 602 589 05 63 00 together with thrust pin (02a) 602 589 05 63 01 into the chain separation tool (03) 602 589 02 33 00.
3 Fit chain separation tool (03) onto timing chain.
Fit chain separation tool (03) onto timing chain pin.
4 Screw in thrust spindle (02) sufficiently until thrust pin (02a) is resting against timing chain pin (arrow).
5 Screw in thrust spindle (02) and press out timing chain pin.
6 Unscrew thrust spindle (02) and take off chain separating tool (03)
7 Remove pressed out timing chain pin (1) from chain separating tool (03).
Riveting Timing Chain
1 Connect new timing chain (5) to old timing chain (4) with assembly link 602 589 02 40 00, consisting of chain lock (6), plate (7), middle plate and cover (8).
The assembly link is not suitable for engine running.
2 Rotate crankshaft in direction of rotation of engine with wrench 001 589 65 09 00. Hold timing chain (5) meshed by hand at the right exhaust camshaft sprocket (9) for this step and pull bottom end of timing chain (4) out of the chain housing as it becomes free.
3 Continue rotating crankshaft until the ends of the new timing chain can be connected with the riveted link.
4 Detach old timing chain and remove assembly link.
5 Insert the ends of the new timing chain with riveted link and middle plate (thickness 1.6 mm) from the rear.
6 Place the thrust piece with marking F1 into the riveting tool and screw on with screw (28) (Fig. A).
7 Place moving thrust piece with marking (D5) into the riveting tool (Fig. B).
8 Insert outer plate (11) (thickness 1.2 mm) into the thrust piece (D5).
9 Fit webs (arrows) onto the rollers at the riveted link.
10 Screw in spindle (06) until a firm resistance is felt.
When screwing in, ensure that the pins of the riveted link can be inserted into the hole of the plate.
11 Turn over thrust piece (D5) to the riveting side (arrow), (Fig. E).
12 Position riveting tool exactly over the middle of the pin (arrow), (Fig. F).
13 Tighten spindle (06).
Torque at spindle 30 - 35 Nm (reference value).
14 Rivet pins of the riveted link individually.
15 inspect riveting (arrows), re-rivet if necessary.
