GF91.60-P-4014-04Q Window Airbag - Function
In the event of a side impact or an angled collision the left window airbag or right window airbag is triggered simultaneous with the left front side airbag or right front side airbag and the left rear side airbag or right rear side airbag (with code 293) by the restraint systems control unit (N2/7).
The window airbag unit is equipped with a hybrid gas generator. Hybrid inflators provide the following advantages compared to standard inflators:
^ Acid free
^ Easier to dispose
Operating procedure
The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) transmits an ignition pulse to the squib in the hybrid gas generator.
The solid fuel is ignited in the fuel chamber by the burning squib.
A pressure builds up in the fuel chamber.
This pressure accelerates the spike towards the burst diaphragm. The burst diaphragm of the composite pressure vessel breaks. The compressed inert gas mixture can escape from the composite pressure vessel through the exhaust vents.
The escaping gas is led under high pressure into the air hose stowed folded up in the roof frame. The air hose which is now inflating tears out the inner paneling on the side of the roof frame and unfolds into the interior.
The air hose reaches its maximum volume after approx. 25 ms. This volume is retained for approx. 3 to 5 sec. thus ensuring that the protective effect is also maintained in the event of a subsequent rollover.
Now the pressure reduction starts. The gas escapes from the airbag via a filter and the airbag collapses.
