Camshaft, Lifters and Push Rods: Testing and Inspection
Checking Operation Of Camshaft Adjuster
Removal, Installation
1 Remove cover (16)
2 Pull off plug connection at the actuator of the camshaft adjuster (Y49)
3 Clamp auxiliary cable (1) to positive cable
- Model 124/163/170: clamp auxiliary cable to positive terminal of battery.
- Model 202, 210: clamp auxiliary cable to terminal 30 of the terminal block (X12/3)
4 Clamp auxiliary cable (2) to vehicle ground
Checking
5 Check operation of camshaft adjuster with engine switched off
- To do this, clamp both auxiliary cables to the electrical magnetic actuator (Y49) of the camshaft adjuster.
- When the actuators (Y49) are energized, the armature must be heard to be attracted together with the control piston of the camshaft adjuster as a result of the magnetic effect.
6 Check operation of camshaft adjuster with engine running
- To do this, start engine and run at idle speed.
- Clamp both auxiliary cables to the electromagnetic actuators (Y49) of the camshaft adjuster.
- When the actuators (Y49) are energized, the engine must idle irregularly or cut out, Camshaft adjuster switched into "advanced" position.
7 Install in the reverse order.
