Engine Lubrication: Testing and Inspection
Measure Oil Consumption
Inspect
1 Check the engine for external oil leakage.
- Eliminate leakages if any.
2 Changing the engine oil change and filter
NOTE:
- The oil consumption test run must be conducted only with fresh engine oil. Hence the engine oil must be changed before the oil consumption test run.
- It is not necessary to change the engine oil if the oil was changed less than a month ago or if the vehicle has not been driven more than a 1000 km since the last time the engine oil was changed.
3 Park the vehicle at an even position and mark the position.
4 Bring the engine oil temperature to 80 degrees C.
- Note the oil temperature with the remote thermometer (02)
5 Switch off engine.
6 After five minutes measure the oil level with the measuring rod (01), if required correct the oil level to the maximum value
NOTE:
- Introduce the measuring rod (01) with the measuring scale pointing to the engine side and take it out after three seconds.
- Read the oil level and note it down.
CAUTION: Avoid adding excess oil, fill up to the oil level "max."
7 Perform measurement run.
NOTE:
- Conduct measurement run over a measured distance of 250 km (if measurement carried out by workshop personnel) or over 1000 km (if measurement carried out by customer).
- If the measurement is conducted by the workshop personnel, take into account the operating conditions of the vehicle at the customer's.
8 Park vehicle again on the marked position
9 Bring the engine oil temperature to 80 degrees C.
- Note the oil temperature with the remote thermometer (02).
NOTE: When the engine is switched off at 80 degrees C to cool the engine oil, before starting the measuring process (no. 5), the engine must be run for about 10 seconds operating the accelerator pedal intermittently in order to ensure uniform measuring conditions.
10 Switch off the engine.
11 After five minutes measure the oil level with the measuring rod (01)
NOTE: Take out the measuring rod after three seconds and read the oil level.
12 Calculate the consumption in liters/1000 km from the quantity of oil consumed (cm3) and the test course (km).
- Oil dipstick reading from 120 mm to 134 mm
- Oil dipstick reading from 105 mm to 119 mm
- Oil dipstick reading from 90 mm to 104 mm
NOTE: An oil consumption of up to 0.8 liters/1000 km is permissible.
13 Depending on the oil consumption, replenish oil or carry out a repair measure.
