The camshaft position is detected by the Hall sensor which detects the position of the 180� segment at the camshaft. The camshaft position is also detected when the engine is not running by means of the electronic system of the Hall sensor. This results in an improvement in the exhaust levels because the optimal injected quantity of fuel is assigned to each cylinder immediately the engine is started. In addition the signal can be used for an emergency start of the engine if the crankshaft position sensor is faulty.

One signal is generated for each revolution of the camshaft.
The signal from the camshaft Hall sensor is approx. 12 V ("high"). If the segment on the camshaft is positioned at the Hall sensor, the signal jumps to 0 V ("low").
The "0 V signal" supplied by the camshaft Hall sensor (B6/1) is used for detecting ignition TDC of cylinder 1.
