Depending on the equipment installed one of the following control units will be installed, hereafter referred to as the "audio unit":
- Radio and navigation unit (A2/56), with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio
- COMAND operating, display and controller unit (A40/3), with code (527) COMAND APS with single DVD drive (with navigation)
Function requirements
- Status "Circuit 15R ON"
- The "audio equipment" is activated
- For operating the mobile phone, with code (386) Mobile phone, the enabled Subscriber identification module (SIM) card must be inserted into the mobile phone
General information on voice control
Various driver information system functions can be called up and operated via the voice control system (VCS [SBS]). The system can be controlled by voice by spelling out or entering complete words. The function is divided into the following processes:
- Function sequence for switching on VCS [SBS]
- Function sequence for entering voice commands
- Function sequence for voice output through the voice control system
- Function sequence for switching off VCS [SBS]
Operating instructions
Voice control is switched on and off using the right VCS [SBS] switch (S93/2) on the steering column tube module (N80).
Function sequence for switching on VCS [SBS]
The control signal from the VCS [SBS] switch is forwarded to the "audio equipment" via the following components:
- Direct line
- Steering column tube module
- Interior CAN
The audio equipment transmits the actuation message via the MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) to the voice control system control unit (A35/11), which activates the integrated voice recognition of the VCS [SBS]. At the same time the handsfree system microphone group (A67b1) is activated and the radio component of the "audio equipment" is muted.

The voice commands are forwarded as follows for a control dialogue for audio functions:
- Handsfree system microphone group
- Direct line
- Voice control system control unit
- MOST
- "Audio unit"

Function sequence for voice output through the voice control system
Voice output on the voice control system on vehicles with code (810) Sound system is sent from the "audio equipment" over MOST to the sound system amplifier (N40/3). From there, the voice output is transmitted via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker (H4/1)
- Right front door speaker (H4/2)
- Left rear door speaker (H4/5)
- Right rear door speaker (H4/6)
- Left front door speaker, mirror triangle (H4/23)
- Right front door speaker, mirror triangle (H4/24)
- Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27)
- Subwoofer speaker (H4/29)
- Left rear surround speaker (H4/54)
- Right rear surround speaker (H4/57)
For vehicles except code (810) Sound system, the voice output is transmitted directly from the "audio equipment" via direct lines to the following speakers:
- Left front door speaker
- Right front door speaker
- Left rear door speaker
- Right rear door speaker
- Left front door speaker, mirror triangle
- Right front door speaker, mirror triangle

Termination and execution commands switch the VCS [SBS] off. Voice commands are forwarded as follows:
