COMAND navigation voice output, shown with following equipment:
^ Code (810) Sound system

Component Identification:

The navigation system route guidance (based on Compact Disc (CD) data) is basically supported by voice output:
^ Direction information
^ Name of road, into which next turn is to be made

The voice data are originally stored on the navigation CD-ROM as individual word segments. This data record is transmitted automatically to the navigation processor by the CD and is stored there. The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following languages at its disposal:
^ German
^ British English
^ American English
^ French
^ Spanish
^ Italian
^ Dutch
^ Swedish
^ Danish
^ Portuguese

Several driving recommendations in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.

If the vehicle is equipped with code (810) sound system, then the voice signals are transmitted digitally from the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) over D2B to the sound amplifier (A2/13). There they are amplified and then output via the vehicle speakers.

The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) connects these word segments to form complete instructions or information and generates corresponding audio frequency signals. The AF signals generated in this manner are transmitted internally to the COMAND operating, display and control unit if required (A40/3), amplified there and output via the vehicle loudspeakers. They can be selected with the "System settings" menu. The data for the voice output are then transmitted by the CD into the navigation processor and stored there.

Loading a language changes both the language output as well as the menu text on the display. Language loading takes place again automatically after a power disconnection.

During the time a language is being loaded from the CD, it is necessary to avoid severe vibrations (e.g. on bad roads). Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. In such cases it is necessary to reload the language.

Voice output superimposed with another audio source
When voice output is active simultaneously with an audio source (e.g. CD, radio), the two signal sources are superimposed.

Voice output volume
The voice output volume can be adjusted during voice output.

A definable interval is maintained automatically between the volume of the current audio source and the volume of the voice output (interval can be changed in "Settings" menu).
During voice output, the volume is reduced. If the specified volume difference to the audio signal is not attained, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) then reduces the level of the audio signal until the specified volume difference is again attained.
After voice output has taken place, the volume of the audio signal is increased to match that of the voice output. The volume of the voice output cannot be reduced to below a certain minimum level.

Voice output mute circuit
The navigation voice output can be muted during voice output by pressing the mute button (button marked with struck-out speaker). The mute feature applies only for the current voice output.

If simultaneous to the navigation's voice output an audio source (e.g. CD, radio) can be heard, then the first time the Mute button is pressed the navigation's voice output is muted and at the 2nd actuation of the Mute button the entire playback is muted.
