The electronically controlled cooling, heating and ventilation system of the automatic air conditioning (AAC [KLA]) achieves the desired interior temperature as quickly as possible or holds it at a constant value by:
- the evaporator cooling the air
- the heating system heat exchanger heating the air

On vehicles from 1.6.02 to 31.5.05, the interior temperature is detected solely by the in-car temperature sensor (N22b1) in the AAC [KLA] control and operating unit (N22).

Heating mode
The in-car temperature sensor (N22b1) or the in-car temperature sensor (N70b1) measure the interior temperature. The outside temperature is recorded by the outside temperature indicator temperature sensor (B14).
The electronic control of the AAC control and operating module (N22) compares the various measured values with the temperature preselected at the temperature selector wheels.
As required, the position of the blend air flaps is either altered or kept constant via the left blend air flap actuator motor (M2/6) and the right blend air flap actuator motor (M2/7).

Cooling mode
The evaporator temperature sensor (B10/6) detects the air temperature at the evaporator's air outlet, the in-car temperature sensor (N22b1) or the in-car temperature sensor (N70b1) detects the interior temperature.
The outside temperature is measured by the outside temperature display temperature sensor (B14) and the air humidity by the air humidity sensor (B31/2) (up to 28.6.06).
