Remove/install Rack-and-pinion Steering
CAUTION: See notes on self-locking nuts and bolts
NOTE: Assessing the steering gear when repairing a vehicle damaged in an accident
1 Move or push adjustable steering column all the way out
NOTE: Necessary for separating the steering coupling (25).
2 Switch off easy entry function for driver's seat and steering wheel
- Vehicles with memory.
CAUTION: Otherwise the driver's seat and steering wheel move to a different position, e.g. when the driver's door is opened or closed. The upper frame may then be damaged when the retainer is installed.
NOTE: It is switched off using the buttons on the steering wheel in the "Comfort" menu on the multifunction display.
3 Extract oil from power steering pump supply reservoir
DANGER:
- Lethal injuries are possible if vehicle slips off of lifting platform
- Align vehicle between the columns of the lifting platform and position the four support plates at the lifting platform support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
4 Remove front wheels
5 Take off bottom engine compartment panel at front and rear
6 Press track rod joint (10a) out of steering knuckle assembly.
7 Detach exhaust shielding plate above the right rubber boot on the retaining plate of the rack-and-pinion steering
8 Detach exhaust shielding plate of steering coupling (23k) on the control valve of the rack-and-pinion steering (23)
NOTE: Three screws
9 Unscrew lower bolt (25b) of steering coupling (25)
NOTE: To do this rotate the steering coupling (25) into the appropriate position
10 Turn the steering wheel into the center position (front wheels in the straight-ahead position) and fix in position
CAUTION: The steering wheel must not be turned with the steering coupling (25) detached otherwise the contact spiral will be destroyed
11 Carefully pull steering coupling (25) out of control valve of rack-and-pinion steering (23) (predetermined breaking point on control valve).
CAUTION: Do not use force (hammer blows excessive leverage)
NOTE: Installation: Turn rack-and-pinion steering (23) to center position and fit steering coupling (25)
12 Detach retainer plate of oil lines (23s) on rack-and-pinion steering (23) and pull out oil lines
NOTE:
- Seal off line connections with plugs
- Installation replace O-rings
13 Detach retainer plate (1g)from rack-and-pinion steering (23), to do this, unscrew bolts (23g)
14 Support rack-and-pinion steering (23) with pit left or assembly lift
15 Detach retainer plate (1g) from front axle earner, to do this, unscrew bolts (23a)
16 Remove rack-and-pinion steering (23)
17 Check rubber mount (21) of rack-and-pinion steering fixture for signs of damage and if necessary replace
- Liquid lubricant (naphtolene H)
18 Install in the reverse order
19 Fill power steering pump
20 Check steering for function and leaks
21 Check toe on front axle and adjust if necessary
