With the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system, all calls are made with the portable CTEL (A34/6) via the hands- free system.

With the UPCI system it is possible to operate different portable CTELs (A34/6) such as Nokia, Siemens and Motorola in the vehicle. Only the respective UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) has to be replaced to do this.

The UPCI system consists of the following components:
- UPCI Portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15)
- UPCI control unit (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (N123/1)
- Telephone antenna (A2/22)
- Telephone/portable CTEL/STH radio remote control antenna splitter (A2/53)
- E-net compensator (A28/3)
- Portable CTEL (A34/6)
- Handsfree microphone (B25)

In addition, depending on vehicle equipment the following audio devices may be installed:
- COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)
- Radio and navigation unit (A2/56)
- Radio (A2)

The portable CTEL (A34/6) is connected to the Digital Data Bus (D2B) of the vehicle via the UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15).

The UPCI system contains the following functions:
- Set up telephone connections in handsfree mode.
- Display call numbers and caller ID.

The UPCI system is activated:
- By the On/Off button on the portable CTEL (A34/6)
- By a wake-up pulse via the D2B from the audio devices
- On activation of circuit 15

The UPCI system is deactivated:
- By the On/Off button on the portable CTEL (A34/6)
- Automatically after the individually settable run-on time on the portable CTEL (A34/6)

The telephone calls can be accepted or terminated by doing the following:
- By pressing the "Accept or terminate call" button on the portable CTEL (A34/6)
- Via the accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) at the multifunction steering wheel (MFL)
- By pressing the "Accept call" button in the control panel on the bottom right-hand side of the audio device installed

Voice is input via the handsfree system microphone (B25) and output via the audio loudspeaker system. The portable CTEL (A34/6) must be in the UPCI portable CTEL holder (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) (A34/15) to do this.
This displays a series of messages in the screens of the following components:
- Portable CTEL (A34/6)
- Multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1)
- In the installed audio devices

The volume of the audio device installed and activated is muted during a telephone conversation to ensure the maximum fidelity for the user via the hands-free system microphone (B25).
The volume of the hands-free system can be individually adjusted by the user using the portable CTEL (A34/6) or via the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) with the + and - button, the adjustment of specific functions, and via volume control (S111s1), and on the audio devices.

Furthermore, the UPCI system can be operated using the following buttons on the multifunction steering wheel (MFL):
- Scroll forward/back pushbutton (S110s1)
- System selection button (S110s3)
- Accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3)
