- with code (813) voice control system (VCS) using voice commands

The audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call. Telephone operation is described in greater detail below. The telephone radio signals are transmitted and received by the telephone antenna (A2/22). The display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) shows when the telephone is in its ready status the destination field strengths in 5 grades. All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with hands-free system activated) are transmitted via the media-oriented system transport (MOST).

To this end the portable CTEL (A34/6) needs an interface to the MOST, which is set up by the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1).

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following telephone functions at its disposal:
- Automatic disabling of telephone card when the Personal Identification Number is incorrectly entered 3 times in a row.
- A 112 emergency call can be placed without Personal Identification Number (PIN) or even when the telephone card is missing.
- Direct dialing of the telephone number using the knob or number pad, display of name of party being called (when number entered is known).
- Speed dial; the first 10 memory locations can be dialed by pressing one key only or all other memory locations can be dialed by entering the 3-digit memory location number
- Select from memory list, sorted according to:
- memory location numbers
- names (alphabetic)
- list of 10 last dialed numbers

- Display of the call number during an incoming call (in the event that the number is also transmitted by radio signal), display of the caller's name (where number is known).

Data safety, SMS buffer
When the power supply fails, the characters stored in the buffer are saved. However, it is possible for up to 4 characters to be lost. When switched off in a controlled manner, no characters are lost. Create SMS /edit SMS are possible only when SMS messages are present in the buffer. Characters are entered with the input aid (Speller) or using the keypad (same as for portable CTEL). These functions are also used for sending SMS messages; a receiver can be entered or dialed from the telephone book.

Switching back on controlled/uncontrolled
After switching back on, the basic telephone display appears. By selecting menu point "SMS" the main SMS menu can be displayed. In the SMS main menu, select "Edit SMS" and continue the editing process using the entry aid (Speller).

The telephone's notebook is always available.

Telephone variants
For the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) the following variants are available for telephone operation:
- With Code (388) "portable CTEL" UPCI system (with Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1), UPCI (Universal Portable CTEL Interface) holder (A34/15) and portable CTEL (A34/6))
- With code (386) preinstallation for "portable CTEL" UPCI system (with Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1))

The Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) is from the same manufacturer as the portable CTEL (A34/6). It realizes the physical connection of the mobile phone to the MOST bus as well as the protocol conversion as per the specification.
