The illustrations show the chronological triggering sequence of the emergency tensioning retractor with a moderately severe head-on collision or the triggering of the emergency tensioning retractor and the airbag with a severe head-on collision. The times that are specified are merely intended to show the short duration of the airbag inflation and deflation procedure and the triggering of the emergency tensioning retractor.

Moderately severe head-on collision
In the event of a moderately severe head-on collision the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) registers a medium deceleration. In this type of impact the seat belt restraining system function in combination with the emergency tensioning retractors ensures the best possible degree of passenger safety.

The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends an ignition pulse to the following components:
- Driver ETR squib (R12/1)
- Passenger ETR squib (R12/2)
- Left rear ETR squib (R12/6)
- Right rear ETR squib (R12/7)

The driver and front passenger emergency tensioning retractors are only triggered if the occupants are belted in.

Protection for non-belted vehicle occupants
In order to protect occupants that are not belted in, an inquiry takes place at the driver and front passenger seats via the driver seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/3) and the front passenger seat belt buckle restraint systems switch (S68/4).

If the occupant is not belted in:
- The driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13) is triggered at the driver side instead of the emergency tensioning retractor
- The front passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4) is triggered at the front passenger side instead of the emergency tensioning retractor

This only applies when the front passenger seat is recognized by the passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition (B48) as occupied. Otherwise the emergency tensioning retractor and the airbag at the front passenger side are not triggered.

Severe head-on collision
In the event of a severe front impact the restraint systems control unit (N2/7) registers a major deceleration.
In this type of impact the airbag and seat belt system restraining functions in combination with the emergency tensioning retractors ensure the best possible degree of passenger safety.

The restraint systems control unit (N2/7) sends an ignition pulse to the following components:
- Driver airbag squib 1 (R12/13)
- Passenger airbag squib 1 (R12/4)
- Driver ETR squib (R12/1)
- Passenger ETR squib (R12/2)
- Left rear ETR squib (R12/6)
- Right rear ETR squib (R12/7)

If also necessary because of the severity of the accident, to the:
- Driver airbag squib 2 (R12/14)
- Front passenger airbag squib 2 (R12/5)

If the front passenger seat occupied and child seat recognition sensor (B48) has detected a front passenger seat that is unoccupied or has a child seat mounted to it, the front passenger airbag will never be triggered in principle.
