The basic principle of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is central control of the different comfort components (radio tuner, telephone, navigation etc.) and simplifying operation. A multistandard CD drive is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) that is designed for navigation digital versatile disks (DVDs) and audio CDs. A TV tuner is also integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). Some of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) controls have specific functions, i.e. the function that is activated is independent of the currently selected menu.
All of the components that can be controlled by the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) are networked together by the Digital Data Bus (D2B). This networking allows the components to be installed in different places in the vehicle without affecting operation using the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).
The system configuration is described in the following. The following are integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3):
- Navigation processor
- Multistandard CD drive
- TV tuner with multifunction capability
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is equipped with an external "AUX" connection for a cassette player (CC) or minidisk player (MD).
There is a cursor key (combined with an Enter key) on the left-hand side beneath the display for navigation purposes. It is used for navigating around the map, (manually) entering destinations on the map and searching within a navigation list.
With code (347a) EMERGENCY CALL (D2B) emergency call system the E-call control unit (A35/8) is installed in the vehicle. The following components are integrated in this unit:
- Yaw rate sensor
- Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver
- Rollover sensor
The following external components and system can be operated using the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3):
- With code (819a) CD changer
- With code (813) Voice control system (VCS)
- Telephone system
Voice output
The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has 2 voice output options:
- Japanese
- English
