The operation of the navigation system (based on Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) data) is supported by voice output. The following voice information can be provided:
- Direction information
- Name of road to turn down next

The voice data is originally stored in the form of individual word segments on the navigation DVD. This data record is transferred automatically from the DVD to the navigation processor, where it is stored.

The navigation processor of the operating, display and control unit COMAND (A40/3n1) combines these word segments into complete instructions or information and generates corresponding low frequency signals.

The LF signals generated in this way are internally transmitted to the COMAND operating, display and control unit audio signal processing unit (A40/3) if required. The voice signals are then amplified and output on the vehicle speakers.

Several driving recommendations in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.
