A1 Instrument cluster
A1p8 Electronic speedometer
A1p13 Multifunction display
L6/1 Left front rpm sensor
L6/2 Right front rpm sensor
L6/3 Left rear rpm sensor
L6/4 Right rear rpm sensor
N47-5 ESP and BAS control unit

Calculation of mileage
To calculate the mileage and the vehicle speed, the processor of the instrument cluster (A1) evaluates the wheel speeds of the following sensors:
- Left front rpm sensor (L6/1)
- Right front rpm sensor (L6/2)
- Left rear rpm sensor (L6/3)
- Right rear rpm sensor (L6/4)

The instrument cluster (A1) receives the wheel speeds in rpm from the ESP and BAS control unit (N47-5) via the class C (engine compartment) controller area network bus (CAN-C).

As the tire circumference differs only very slightly among all the approved tires, no coding of the tire circumference is necessary.

Displaying the total mileage
- The total mileage is displayed as a 6 digit number in kilometers or miles on the main screen of the multifunction display (A1p13) as soon as the instrument cluster (A1) is activated.
- The range for the main odometer is from 0 to 999.999 kilometers or miles. If the maximum mileage is reached, the counter is not reset to 0 kilometers or miles. It is then necessary to replace the instrument cluster (A1).

Displaying the trip mileage
- The trip mileage is displayed as a 5-digit number in kilometers or miles on the main screen of the multifunction display (A1p13) as soon as the instrument cluster (A1) is activated.
- The range for the trip odometer is from 0 to 9999.9 kilometers or miles. Once the maximum reading is reached the display reverts to 0 kilometers or miles.

Resetting the trip odometer
The trip odometer is reset to zero by pressing the trip odometer reset button (A1s3) when the instrument cluster (A1) is activated and the main screen (total and trip mileage) is displayed on the multifunction display (A1p13).

If the trip odometer reset button (A1s3) is pressed for longer than 60 seconds the instrument cluster (A1) assumes that the button is jammed. The instrument cluster (A1) then presumes that the trip odometer reset button (A1s3) has not been pressed.

Switching between kilometers and miles
The mileage display can be switched over from kilometers to miles by means of the Settings function.

If a rpm sensor does not send a rpm signal via the CAN-C due to a malfunction, the mileage is calculated using the remaining rpm sensors. If implausible values are received from all rpm sensors, the total and trip mileage odometer values are saved and an error message is set. A mileage of "0" is then displayed.

The instrument cluster (A1) also passes the current reading of the main odometer on the class B (passenger compartment) (CAN -B) and CAN-C controller area network bus.

Storage of data
If the battery (G1) is removed, the total mileage is stored for at least 5 years.
The trip mileage is also protected against data loss if the battery (G1) is removed.

Advancing the total mileage
It is not possible to advance the total mileage. If a replacement part is to be installed, the required mileage must be set by the supplier.

Resetting the total mileage (except code (494a) USA version and code (460) additional parts for vehicles for Canada)
The total mileage can be reset up to a mileage of 250 km using STAR DIAGNOSIS. However, this can only be done once.

Resetting the total mileage (only code (494a) USA version and code (460) additional parts for vehicles for Canada)
It is not possible to reset the total mileage. If a replacement part is to be installed, the required mileage must be set by the supplier.
