Operating procedure
Basic requirements:
- The exterior lamp switch (S1s1) of the light switch module (S1) is set to "headlamps ON" or "standing lamp ON".
- The vehicle speed is < 60 km/h.

1 The exterior lamp switch (S1s1) is pulled out to 2nd. notch position "rear fog lamp ON".
2 The fog lamp indicator lamp (S1e1) and the rear fog lamp indicator lamp (S1e2) on the light switch module (S1) light up and indicate actuation of the left and right fog lamps (E5/1 and E5/2) and rear fog lamp (E4e5).
3 The front SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/1) records along with the "headlamps ON" or "standing lamp ON" position the "fog lamp ON" and "rear fog lamp ON" signals.
4 The front SAM control module with fuse and relay module actuates the left fog lamp (E5/1) and the right fog lamp (E5/2) and at the same time it sends over the CAN interior the "rear fog lamp ON" signal to the rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/2).
5 The rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N10/2) evaluates the signal pending in the CAN interior from the instrument cluster (A1) for the instantaneous ground speed and actuates the fog lamp (E4e5) as the ground speed < 60 km/h.

In accordance with the German vehicle licensing regulations the operation of rear fog lamps in the Federal Republic of Germany is only permitted in fog, rain or snowfall with visibility of less than 50 m and with accordingly reduced vehicle speed. The ground speed dependent actuation serves to protect against any unintentional operation, if the driver e.g. after the poor visibility has improved increases speed, without switching off the rear fog lamps.

If a trailer is detected the rear SAM control module with fuse and relay module (N 10/2) interrupts the vehicle rear fog lamp (E4e5). Only the trailer's rear fog lamp is then actuated.
