The telephone system can be operated as follows:
- Directly at the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3)
- At the multifunction steering wheel (MFL) in combination with the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1)
- With the voice control system (VCS) (code 813)

The telephone radio signals are transmitted and received by the telephone antenna (A2/22) and amplified with the portable CTEL antenna amplifier (A28/2). The display of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) shows when the telephone is in its ready status the destination field strengths in 5 grades.

All control signals and useful signals (e.g. sound signals with handsfree system activated) are transmitted via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). For this reason, the portable CTEL (A34/6) requires the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI [UHI]) control unit (N123/1) as an interface to the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST).

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following telephone functions:
- Automatic disabling of telephone card when the Personal Identification Number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
- Direct dialing of the telephone number with the rotary control or number pad, display of name of party being called (when number entered is known).
- Speed dialing: The first 10 numbers stored in the memories can be dialed by pressing one key only; all other memories can be dialed by entering the 3-digit memory location number
- Dialing from lists stored in the memory
- Numbers stored in the memory
- Names (alphabetic)
