The position of the vehicle and the direction and distance to the destination (based on destination entered) are determined by the navigation system integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3). Then the required measures for reaching the destination are started (route guidance).

The navigation processor with Digital Versatile Disk (DVD) drive that is integrated in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) is activated by pressing the "NAVI" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3).It reads in the digital map data from the inserted navigation DVD.

Destination entry
The destination is entered on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) using a menu system. Only destinations that can be found on the navigation DVD can be entered.

Several options are available in input mode for entering a destination. The destination is entered via:
- Map
- SPECIAL DESTINATIONS
- Destination memory
- Post/ZIP code
- Selecting from the previous 10 destinations
- Entry using Hiragana (Japanese syllable language)
- Selecting addresses from lists (e.g. town names, districts)

Dynamic supplementation
It is realized for manual entry of the destination. During entry of the destination, letters not yet entered are supplemented from a list. The supplemented characters have a black background. Deleting can be accomplished character by character.

Position finding
The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) continuously calculates the current position of the vehicle using the localizing system.

Route calculation
The route is calculated by the navigation processor in accordance with the specified destination, or automatically, after a deviation from the suggested route has taken place.

Route guidance
Navigation starts after the navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has calculated the route. When dynamic navigation is taking place the route calculation is automatically calculated using traffic information.
