Function
After a request has been received from the telephone handset (A34), for example, the mobile radio signals are transmitted and received by the D2B telephone transmitter/receiver (A35/13) using the telephone antenna (A2/22). In portable CTEL mode the signals are transmitted via the E-net compensator (A28/3) to the telephone interface (A34/4).
The task of the compensator is to compensate through amplification for any losses, which occur as a consequence of the higher transmission frequencies in the E-net.
All control and wanted signals (e.g. audio signals from activated handsfree system) are transferred via the digital data bus (D2B) .
In order to communicate with D2B subscribers, the portable CTEL needs an interface to the D2B, which is the telephone interface (A34/4).
The battery of the portable CTEL (A34/6) is charged via the telephone interface (A34/4). The battery is charged automatically as soon as the telephone interface (A34/4) is active, irrespective of whether the portable CTEL (A34/6) is switched on or off.
The radio (A2) has the following telephone functions:
- Automatic disabling of telephone card when the personal identifier number is entered incorrectly 3 times.
- Direct dialing of the subscriber's number via the numerical keypad, display of the name of the person called (in the event that the entered number is known).
Speed-dialing of the first 10 memory locations by pressing one key only or dialing all other memory locations by entering the 3-digit memory location number
Selection from memory lists sorted according to:
- Memory location numbers
- Names (alphabetic)
- List of the last ten dialed numbers
- Display of caller's number when call is received (if number was transmitted)
- Display of name if number is known
- SMS reading
- Edit telephone book
- Edit notebook
- Note caller number
The voice control system control unit (A35/11) is connected to the radio (A2) and the D2B telephone transmitter/receiver (A35/13) via the D2B. The voice control system is used for telephone operation and several audio operating functions (e.g. station search function, track change function for CD, etc.). The audio source is automatically muted during a telephone call. It is possible to listen to the telephone call via the vehicle speakers.
Handsfree mode
During a phone call it must be possible for the user to hold the conversation via the handsfree system.
For this the handsfree system microphone (B25) is located on the overhead control panel control unit (N70). From here the microphone signals are forwarded directly to the D2B telephone transmitter/ receiver (A35/13), digitized and transmitted via D2B to the sound amplifier (A2/13) if necessary. There the signals are conditioned again and output to the sound system via the vehicle speakers.
Phone variants
The following telephone operating variants are available for the radio (A2):
- With code (852) full portable CTEL preinstallation on upper center console (with telephone interface (A34/4) and E-net compensator (A28/3))

- With code (855) TELE AID (with D2B telephone and TELE AID transmitter/receiver (A35/17) and telephone handset (A34))
The telephone interface (A34/4) is from the same manufacturer as the portable CTEL. It realizes the physical connection of the cellular phone to the D2B system as well as the protocol conversion as per the D2B specification.
