The radio (A2) consists of a radio with cassette section and can be combined with a 6-disk CD changer.
The radio (A2) is the central operating module for the entertainment and communication systems integrated into the vehicle within the D2B ring.
For entering and displaying information it has VFD display, function keys, a rotary controller and a cross rocker.
The following connection options are available as a maximum:
^ Sound system
^ CD changer
^ Telephone
^ Voice control
Some functions can be activated using the multifunction steering wheel buttons.
In the process it should be observed that all button operations on the multifunction steering wheel are first worked on by the instrument cluster (A1). The instrument cluster (A1) links the incoming key actuations with the current menu setting on the multifunction display (A1p13) and, where applicable, it sends a corresponding CAN message via the CAN interior (CAN-B) to the radio (A2).
The following information hereto is shown in the instrument cluster (A1):
^ phone numbers
^ transmitter frequencies
^ CD or cassette mode
^ transmitter station names
D2B bus system
The radio's (A2) digital components are connected to each other by the D2B fiber optical cable bus system. The bus system is used to transmit data (control commands and useful information) between the various system components. As to some extent the individual components operate with various data formats and different requirements on bit rate and reliability are made, various bus systems are installed:
^ D2B (Digital Data Bus)
^ CAN interior (CAN-B)
^ CAN engine compartment (CAN-C)
The following conditions must be in effect for startup:
^ Transmitter key (A8/1) "terminal 15R ON"
^ D2B ring active
The D2B ring can also activate D2B components (for example the phone).
System activation
The radio (A2) switches on if the rotary controller is pressed. The volume is regulated at the rotary controller for the audio source adjusted in each case. The function keys switch over to the audio source desired by the user. Operation of the radio (A2) is by:
^ Fixed programmed function keys
^ Alphanumeric key block
^ Eject key
^ Programmable function keys
^ Rotary controller with integral handsfree button
^ Cross rocker with operating button
^ Switch-on button
^ Mute button
^ Control buttons on multifunction steering wheel
Speed-dependent volume control (speed-dependent volume control function)
As vehicle speed increases so does the driving noise (wind noise). In order to achieve an ideal sound quality without any manual control, the radio (A2) volume is matched to the secondary noise. The speed data are sent by way of the CAN interior (CAN-B).
Interfaces
The CAN interior (CAN B) is used for data exchange with the instrument cluster (A1). This way the instrument cluster (A1) receives the audio and telephone data from the radio (A2) for the multifunction display (A1p13) in the instrument cluster (A1), as well as the time via this bus.
The time synchronization between the radio (A2) and the instrument cluster (A1) can also be performed using the multifunction steering wheel.
